Question about selling on Ebay

I have a question to see if everyone is thinking what i am thinking or if I am just jumping to conclusions. I sold something on Ebay a few days before Thanksgiving. 2 weeks go by and the buyer says they did not receive the item. Of course i forgot to do delivery confirmation on this item because...well i don't know why but I did not do delivery confirmation to protect myself. i know...stupid. In this time we were communicationing at least daily and sometimes twice a day about the status. as soon as i give the refund i hear nothing back at all. After 3 days of asking for a status and hearing nothing back i contact Ebay and they contact them. 15 minutes later i get an email from the buyer basically telling me to stop emailing them daily and they will get back to me when they receive the package. I have not heard back since and i emailed them a few times asking if someone else in the house could of brought it in without them knowing or if even there is a chance that someone could of stolen it off of their porch. I have not heard back. Is it safe to assume that they received the refund and the item and decided to keep both. i know that Ebay can't help me because there is no proof of delivery and i am fine with that. But would you assume they received the item and decided to keep it or am i the only one assuming they are thieves. does anyone have any tricks that they used that would trick them into revealing that they have the item?

Chalk it up to experience and move on. You're not going to find out anything, and the buyer isn't going to volunteer any info it appears. Right now, you're probably bordering on getting spanked by Ebay for harrassing him.

  • Afternoon,

Does he sell? If he does watch his stuff weekly, about a year from now it will show up in his listings. I speak from experience, I had DC, the DC showed going to Bethesda Maryland, then Limbo forever, Buyer says never recieved, year later shows up in his Store. I was later told this was a very common occurence with the Medical Center at Bethesda by the Post Office.

Not much you can do other than accept the fact that you sent an Xmas gift to an A-hole,

One thing you can do is post the user name here, it won't get your $$ or item back, but it will land the buyer on many blocked bidder lists, and maybe someone here even knows the buyer and can shame him into paying for the item. At the very least it will make it harder for the buyer to do it again.

The item was not card related. it was a Harry Potter Lego set that my kids played with and now no longer care about. The problem was that it was one of the older rarer ones. I figured that i will just move on but maybe if there was a chance i would try it. I did ask ebay about harrassing him and they told me that my emails are all legit and they do not consider it harrrassment but only concern to see if they received the item. Their user ID by the way is expressrodeopunk.

That is called mail fraud and it is easy to get the USPS to pursue it for you if you have
a serialized item number of what you sent (e.g. the PSA flip number), your USPS receipts
and a copy of the listing in his eBay store

At the time (3-4 years ago) USPS told me that they had ongoing problems at their Bethesda Med Center Sattelite mailing centers. That it was ongong, that there was Nothing they could/would do about it and basically told me to go Pound sand. I did some research and there was something like 10 different contracted mailing centers and 30-50 Thousand people there at any given time. The items were Original 1960's TV Show Press Release Photos, each one of a kind, but not serial numbered. About $200 dollars worth. The A$$wipe was the owner of a Beauty Salon at Bethesda, Oriental and according to the USPS source I spoke to suspected of doing this dozens of times, but they still wouldn't do anything. I called and spoke to the Lady there and although not admitting it, still basically told me to go F$$Ck myself that there was nothing I could do.They are now gone or more likely just doing it under another user name. Just before they were Naru'd under the ID they were up to about 10 Negs out of 20 transactions for claiming items not recieved. Evidently they figured out some sort of loophole in the DC delivery mechanism at Bethesda or how to get packages without triggering the actual end delivery, never did figure out exactly what was happening 100%.

    Just moved on.

Down at the very bottom of a page is "site map" that you click on, then in the center colum of next page is "Block Bidder/Buyer List" that you click on, then click "Add an eBay user to my Blocked Bidder/Buyer List" on the next page and finally enter the username you wish to block into the box on the page.

There is always a chance - probably slim - that the item actually did not make it to his house. Maybe lost in the USPS system, taken by a USPS employee or stolen off the porch.

Wierd! On the Bethesda.. There should be an investigation on that.

I asked him in two separateemails if he thinks that there is a chance of it being stolen. They did not respond to either email at all. There is always a chance it is in route still in the USPS system but i did have a return address and in the past if they can't deliver it it gets sent right back to the sender.

I don't see any reason to assume he's anything but a legit buyer at this point. Yeah, he's tired of the emails, but his history (such as it is) looks clean.

  • Sorry this happened but teaches a good lesson. I have heard of buyers who just wait for a package to show up with no dc and then claim it never got there. Free item for them with nothing you can do. I would make mention of it on their feedback something like- Fully refunded buyer because package never arrived. That way you leave a paper trail if he tries it again.

I recieved two purchases this week that were over $500 and both sellers sent the cards with only DC, if I wanted to steal the cards all I had to do was report that the package showed up but it was empty and I could have forced a paypal refund.

    Be smart-

Always mail with DC and if over $250 then always have Sig Confirm!
  • Lame question how much does it cost for delivery confirmation usually?

How do you do a confirmation if I'm mailing it myself - can it still be done or is it when I only print out the label in my own house?
  • handymanhandyman Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭✭✭
I sold a set to someone for 250.00(the magic number I guess) I sent it USPS priority mail with just 100.00 worth of insurance and DC. I normally (92%) of the time will send it with SIgn of couse. But this time I didnt. Guy bought like over 1500 items this year. Well 2 days after my DC said it was there he files a clam with no email at all to me. End of story I was forced to refund him 250.00+11.00 SH charge.
Now if I do sell it and its 249.99 Ill send it with Sign no mater what.

This is one of those things I've always disagreed with regarding Paypal/Ebay. If the DC shows that you mailed the item and it was entered into USPS's system, then the seller should be completely off the hook, even if it didn't make it to the destination. There's proof that the item was mailed.

My last 60+ ebay purchases have been stamp collecting things. Not 1 item was sent with DC. Guess people don't pull that crap in that hobby. Granted, the things I buy rarely exceed $30 but still is weird getting things in the mail with hand written envelopes with stamps on them LOL
