New Scanner. How do these scans look?

I literally haven't had an up and running scanner in maybe 4 years. Bought an all in one at wallyworld today. epson nx330.

Here are the first test scans. using the default color photo setting. Walter and the 81BKB I changed the res to 600, while I left it at 300 for the T cards.

Anyone care to offer any settings suggestions, or do these look good.

Thanks, Bob (mr. welcome back to scan world guy).

    Seem a little "hazy".

    A little blurry.

If it has an "unsharp mask" option in the settings, turn it on and see if it helps.
  • lawnmowermanlawnmowerman Posts: 19,477 ✭✭✭✭
I just looked up the model. It's an all in one so the quality will not be as good as a dedicated scanner.

    1) Payton seems blurry

    2) scoring leaders better, but a hair blurry

    3) T206's still blurry and a little hazy.

    Nice cards too.

<< <i>Yeah i have the same problem with my scanner ... can't seem to get the text and card to be as clear as i want ... scanner seems to focus on the plastic surface which is closer to it than the actual card and flip ... got no idea how to fix this ...

any help would be much appreciated! >>

The nx330 has a CIS sensor instead of a CCD. The CIS is optimized for documents, not 3D objects, so you're right about it focusing on the plastic.

+1 to this -- once I did all my PSA card scans came out sharp.

If you are going to sell graded cards on line you need to present them in a way that shows how nice they are, or you are losing bidders and losing money.

I posted some scans on my old POS scanner and cards looked "fuzzy" on edges and corners. Cards that were graded 8 that looked in hand like 9's looked like 7's when posted.

Searched the message boards and bought the most recommended scanner Epson Perfection V300. Shipped to my door for around $80.00 has already paid for itself.

As someone who was in sales, I can tell you that the appearance of your product and it's first impression are what sells it.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

Same card the second one is scanned at 300 dpi and 48 bit color, unsharp mask level; high, dust removal level; medium. I am sure I could have gotten an improved image with the old scanner, but it's such an old model, it didn't have the settings the Epson does.

Which card would catch your eye?

Yeah, I agree with everyone. The scans blow. Messed around with some of the settings, think this is as good as I can get. this is without question the most "registered" card I have. Corners could cut you too. It looks like crap. What a pisser.

Oh well. Just wanted to add that I didn't really buy one for selling, as I've been using the e-bay consigners lately if looking to sell. just wanted to be able to scan again. Are there any all in ones (my wife wants the copy/print part) that have promise?

Why not just let your wife keep the new all in one and buy yourself a scanner just for cards? There is always something wearing out on those all in ones. A dedicated scanner will last for many years.

I would just like to say that not every all-in-one is a CID/CIS element. HP makes a number of AIOs that have a CCD element and single source Xenon Tube lighting. Those are the two features that are a must for great scans every time, with the charge coupled device element being most key.

This is from an HP All-In-One:

This is from an Epson V330 stand-alone scanner, which is CCD, but has a multi-LED light source (sh*tty for metallic and refractor cards):

Just bought an Epson v30 online and received it yesterday. Haven't hooked it up yet, but had to replace my HP G3010 which was 4 years old and was getting cloudy inside the glass. Was only $59.99 delivered from Adorama in NYC.

I bought the Epson recently. The scans are great but I don't care for the software at all.

As I have said quite a few times, the Epson V300 Photos scanner is GREAT! I have had mine for two years and love the way it works. I believe I have never changed the factory settings and still love the results. WOuld probably be even better if I did.

Bob, you have some nice cards with good value. As was said by Matt ... get an Epson V300 for less than $100.00 and use it just to scan your cards. You sell on the boards once in a while ... the new scanner will eventually pay for itself.

    Thanks all.

Guess I'll pick up the V300 after the holidays and keep the AIO for now.

Don't think the wife would notice an extra piece of electronic equipment in the house if she tripped over it, it flew into the air, and it landed on her head. In her case, ignorance is bliss.

    << <i>.....Guess I'll pick up the V300 after the holidays.......... >>

You may only need the v30 Bob. I think the v300 is really only needed if you are working with slides and film.

I just checked and the v300 only about $15 to $25 more than the v30, so no big deal either way.
  • JoeBanzaiJoeBanzai Posts: 12,005 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes, the V30 should be good enough. I have the V300, but after I got it, continued to read about scanners and the V30 looks like the exact same thing as far as scanning baseball cards go. The V300 has features you might not need.

I have been looking for a new scanner for awhile - my current one works just fine but is not supported in Vista x64. So I did a bunch of searching on Amazon and found that the Epson V30 sounded like what I wanted. Nice to have those thoughts confirmed in this thread (I have not yet bought the scanner - it's a Christmas present).

Always great when someone scans their Weiners...

BTW, the V30 is available from Adorma for under $60.00 delivered (under $65.00 if you're in NY/NJ) and in hand before Christmas.

Just like the $79.00 deal on the V300 I posted last year, you can get this one by clicking here!
  • Ok Guys I got the V30 all set up and ready to go. Im really happy with it. I was using a Canon and with some tweeky of the settings itwasn't to bad, but I just couldn't get the sharpness and clarity on the slabbed cards.

As someone said, This thread is usless without scans! And with me already being a card scanning junkie, and a new scanner, I may never STOP!

MODERN you say? How did it do on my all time favorite Emmitt card? Beautiful I think. I just love the way the SGC slab looks like little LED lights in the top and bottom of the slab.

I think it was joeBanzai who said he did not care for the software that came with the Epson V30. He is correct, It is pretty limited as compared to other scanners I have had.

In fact I don't even use it. Im still using the Editing software that came with the Canon LIDE 100 scanner(Arcsoft Photo Sudio 5) I unhooked before getting this V30.

Here is the Process I have be using to scan with the Epson V30.

I choose the "Professional" mode with 48-bit color at 350 Resoultion, with the "Unsharp Mask" and "Dust Removal" checked in the Adjustment area.

(The 350 Resoultion take just a hint longer when scanning and 300 Resolution would probably work just fine)

EVERYTHING else is done after opening the scan from the V30 into the Canon Arcsoft Photo studio 5 software from my previous scanner.
I don't believe the Canon software has anything that special in it. Most standard Photo Editing software like "Photo Shop" "Paint Shop Pro" etc.. have most of these
features which are pretty common for any photo editing software to have. Thats why the Epson software sucks, it doesn't even include the basic editing tools.

    OPEN SCAN

CROP AREA YOU WISH TO SAVE
(Very important Note: After you crop your scan you NEED to be viewing it at ACTUAL SIZE(Click view / choose "Actual size") It WILL be quite larger.

Next you need to EDIT the IMAGINE SIZE (All the vertical cards are 400/Width/pixels) (Horizontal cards are 600 Width/pixels, which keeps them about the same size as the vertical cards when viewing.

ADD a border if you wish

From the "ENHANCE" menu choose SHARPEN

    and WALAAAAAA your done!

Other odd size things you just have to experiment with. The Sunoco Stamps were saved at 350 instead of 400

As for having a bunch of "Debris" on the SGC Blacket gaskets? I always keep my scanner Bed Clean as well as the slabs before scanning.

    Now without any further ado!

69 Topps Scanned cleanly and Clearly!

Oh and the 69 Raws came out Beautiful and handeled the text on back as well.

But how would the V30 fair against the Multi-colored 1971 Topps Football Set in SGC holders with some of the smallest and longest text on the reverse sides?

    imageimage
    imageimageimage
    imageimageimage

    With Flying Colors of coarse!

Now lets just see how it can handel some of my Favorite 1972 Topps cards which feature some very tough text on green backdrop on the reverse.

    imageimage

I like it very much! Some of my absolute favorite cards featuring The Cowboys Dominating the Playoffs and then crushing That Dolphin Team that would go undefeated the next year. I tuely believe if it hadn't been for those PESKY "Over the Hil Gang" Redskins upsetting Roger, That Cowboy Team would have repeated as SB champs by beating that Dolphin Team a second time. They just matched up so much better than that Redskin Team, which really had no chance.

Well we,ve seen the V30 in action with regular cards, raw and Graded, but how will it do on Smaller items like my beloved 1972 Sunoco Stamp Set?

    imageimageimage
    imageimageimage
    imageimageimage
    imageimageimage

Absolutely Fantastic! Really brang out the detail in these small action pack photos! Now lets see how it does on a few of the full size pages from the 72 Sunoco Collector Album.

Bigreddog, under the UNSHARP MASK, what level do you have it on? There are three: Low, Medium, High.
Also, I am not able to select DUST REMOVAL on mine....it is grayed out. Any suggestions?

PS - I think I figured it out - for "Auto Exposure Type" setting, I had chosen "Document". I am guessing you chose "photo"?

Whats more interesting is the "Dust removal" and the period in the half grades. If you look back through my scans it only effected the PSA slabs. The SGC slabs still have the period. ??????
