1975 Topps cello with Munson on top sold for $229 last night on eBay

That's pretty steep for a '75 with a non-HOFer on top (granted, a very revered player and a PSA 9 pack). My $140 snipe never stood a chance. Anyone here lucky enough to be the proud new owner?

  • I've sold that a 75 cello with munson for $275 before, so that numbers seems about right to me...

not a hofer but more popular than many of the hofer's that were wrapping up their careers in the 70's and being a yankee doesn't hurt

Still, it's pretty close to what a '75 cello with Brett's rookie on top recently sold for (although that was in a GAI 7 holder). I guess it just takes 2 people who want it and have the means.

It'd have gone for more if T/B centering were a bit better. Munson packs always go for a premium higher than some HOFers.

Munson will go for more than most other HOF's in the 1975 set because more people collect Munson, regardless of HOF status.
If you use Brett as an example, there's 27 Brett basic sets registered compared to 55 for Munson.

1975 TOPPS CELLO PACK THURMAN MUNSON ON TOP PSA 9 MINT (#250841899262) US $308.07

Actually Daniel, $229 is the new low for a Munson 75 cello if Rick sold one for $275 and i sold one raw for $241
and the one sold last july 4th for $308, now if you consider that i only paid $10 for that pack in 1981 then it does seem
a bit steep to me, i never thought it would ever reach not even $100

It def doesn't present as nice but this thread motivated me to pick up the 72 wax on eBay with Munson on top. Had been eyeing it for a little

I thought the $229 was steep in December of 2011. One just sold last night on the 'bay for $395.

Wonder if that came from the StarPax factory.

70s, I think he is; his post above is from way back-- I had to check again myself.
  • Love the card and the set but would rather own two munson psa 9's over the pack. I'd rip it and get an 8.

So much for the star pack market softening..

Yes, it's sad to see collectors paying top dollar for bad packs. What happened should be broadcast by the parties involved so the news reaches collectors, then we'd see what effect the news has on the market.

I am fairly certain this Munson pack originated with Jose.
  • My thinking to and reason I stayed a mile away from this one.

Logically you may be right, but I don't think that will necessarily be the case. The graded card market has weathered its share of scandals and has proven to be rather resilient.

You may be right Tim. However, there are so many less graded packs with stars on top as compared to slabbed cards. If exposed in it's entirety, it may be proven that a MUCH larger percentage of the unopened with STARS showing are bad as compared to the percentage of slabbed cards that are bad.

For the sake of the hobby I hope I am wrong!
