1960-1979 Who has the FINEST SET Possible?

I was looking at the Registry today and thought, "Who has the finest set possible from 1960-1979. (Try to follow me here) I took the #1 finest set from each of those years and took the leaders current SET RATING and tried to figure out WHAT % of the POSSIBLE FINEST would be.

Lets take my 1974 set for example...

My set rating is 8.08 The Finest Possible Set Rating is 8.38

So I divided my set rating by the finest possible set rating (8.08/8.38=96.42%)

Here is the list...

1972 98.00%
1967 96.80%
1974 96.42%
1960 95.05%
1971 94.68%
1961 93.93%
1963 89.89%
1965 88.32%
1964 88.30%
1969 74.56%
1968 64.92%
1966 60.48%
1975 47.04%
1976 45.60%
1970 38.90%
1973 38.63%
1978 25.76%
1962 18.63%
1979 13.60%
1977 6.76%

Frank's 1972 set leads the way and it is not even 100% complete yet. AWESOME.

This was done yesterday so if there were updates today I didn't recalculate.

I thought I would be interesting to look at the registry in a different way.

Hope you like it...

Carlos

  • Carlos: you have way too much time on your hands. That said, I'll make a prediction that the 98% set will never be equaled.

    Guffy,

I think your right, Except for the 1986-87 PSA 10 Basketball set. As far as PRE-80's Baseball sets go...This may be the best.

I was going to do the 50's but I ran out of "Free Time".

  • Au Contraire, Guff-meister. I'm glad I don't get my lottery numbers from you. Granted, Carlos included only '60-'79 in his survey, but take a look at #1 in 1959 Baseball. This guy's got a set of plates in his basement and a rotary cutting blade, methinks. He almost registers a "TILT" with an astounding 98.86% of the highest grade possible. It's not inconceivable that he could someday bump up the highest possible rating himself by getting 6 raw cards to grade a NINE. If he does that before PSA updates the composition, he could break the 100% barrier! All the rest of us should be humbled by his TOPPSness.

    I just looked at that set...WOW 98.86%

  • Just a set I know about, and I'll give him a plug 'cause he's a good guy, is thegemmintman's 1964 Topps Giants set. I know that it is a supplemental set but his set rating is astounding. Also, it may have been overlooked because the Finest Possible rating that is published is incorrect. By my calculations, and I may be wrong (thegemmintman always dodges this question from me), is that the true Finest Possible rating is 9.3. With his current set rating at 9.26 and using your method of calculation, that would put it at 99.57%. It is amazing, especially for a set that has so many collectors.

    Pinhigh,

HMMMMMM...I don't know what is more amazing. Gemmint's % or the fact the he is a "good guy" LOLimage

Thanks for the plug pinhigh image. But come on, I never dodge that question (why would I?). Bigkid asked me what the Finest Possible Rating was, and I offered to tell him, but he said thanks but not to bother he would just look at my set rating when he wants to know. I just dodge your other questions.

Anyway, Carlos specifically left smaller sets out of his analysis because he's prejudiced against small sets, and he's a big set meanie image.

P.S. I think your numbers are correct.
  • thegemmintmanthegemmintman Posts: 3,101 ✭✭
Carkim - LOL, both are vicious rumors.

    Gemmint,

I may be crossing over very soon. These big sets are killing me! I still need 1619 cards to complete the ten sets I am actively working on. OUCH!!!

Is there room down there for a BIG SET MEANIE!!! lol image

    Gee, at 91.3% I feel uhh . . . "inadequate".
  • thegemmintmanthegemmintman Posts: 3,101 ✭✭
Carkim, you should try a couple of small sets - less stress, kick back, and enjoy the good life.

    P.S. It's a babe magnet.

Vargha, 91.3%? Who let you on this board anyway?
  • carkimcarkim Posts: 1,166 ✭✭
    Vargha,

    Still impressive nonetheless.

    Gemmint,

Chicks dig the BIG SETS, (Just ask my lovely wife.)

    Carlos
  • Carkim - LOL image. I meant to say it's a babe magnet if one collects a small set like the TOPPS GIANTS.

    Gemmint,

    Well said (Nice Comeback)image

    Carlos
  • Gemmint - Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "dodge" but I have asked that question a couple of times since BigKid, with no response from you. No problem though, I just figured you were boycotting my questions. image Plus, you deserve the plug.

Carlos - I have to make him feel decent on occasion. Plus, since Bill Gates' "monopoly" problems, I think Gemmint is beginning to get concerned. The anxiety isn't good for his self-image.

Vargha - Considering the competition you are faced with, your % is far more than "adequate." I just hope I live to see the day your name is at the top of '51 Bowman list.

Thanks -- however your wish probably involves the deaths of two prominent collectors.
  • I didn't think of it that way, though I probably should have. You never know, there may be some big find where this lady sees this man reading SMR, with the '51 Bowman Mantle on the cover, to look at some "pristine" cards that she has in her attic in Florida.

    That actually happened to me.

She was in her 80's and said that they were her late husbands cards. Come to the house and take a look. Then when we got there, she admitted she lied and that it was nice having a man around the house - she'd been alone for a long time. Then it turned ugly.... image
