Need Info...Arnie Herber 1933 Diamond Star Matchbook RC

Hey all, I need some info on this item I have. It is a 1933 Diamond star Matchbook of Packers Hall of Famer Arnie Herber. It is not in the best of condition, missing the striker as well as the matches. I tried to do some research on the net to see how rare these are and can't seem to find any info on this one at all. I found some info on the other Packers in the set but it seems like the Herber can be very rare. If anyone has any info that can help me out that would be great. Thanks

here is a link to the pic

I know all the baseball ones real well, but not the 3 football sets

They are in the ACC though, under "U"

they are not related to Diamond Stars Gum, they are made by the Diamond Match Co.

here is the description in ACC that matches yours the closest

""U5 Football Players, silver football (90) orange or green background, the former being scarcer""

yours looks to be the orange type and is said to be scarcer (the ACC was originally written 60+ years ago though)

the football ones are much tougher than most of the baseball ones
here is a link to some of your type known as "U5" in the ACC (American Card Catalog)

Hi, Yes it is a very rare matchbook and one I have been looking for. I have seen 2 available for sale in the last 5 years. One was very nice, had the striker and was priced in the $1600 range. I was not able to pull the trigger as I believe was a $1200 MB. There was another that ended up selling for just over 1K. I cant remember the exact price or date of sale but it was not as nice but also had the striker. I would estimate the value of yours in the $400-600 range. But, that being said, I wouldn't be suprised if listed on ebay if it reached 1K since it has been a long time since one was listed. Most collectors (like me) will pay a premium if the striker is still attached. Hope that helps.

Do you have any other MB's? I have some hall of famers (that is all I collect)

    Here are my MB's

    Clark Hinkle
    Turk Edwards
    Bill Hewitt
    Red Badgro
    Cliff Battles
    Ray Flaherty
    Walt Keisling
    Blood McNally
    Joe Stydahar

I'm still looking for the following

    1933
    Mel Hein
    Arnie Herber
    Cal Hubbard
    Bronko Nagurski
    Ken Strong

    1934
    George Musso
    Link Lyman

    1936
    Dan Fortmann

    1938
    Alex Wojciechowicz

  • I only have the Herber right now, I did however recently trade a complete Cal Hubbard Matchbook with the striker and all matches. Looking back probably didn't get enough for it, but can't complain since I originally picked it up for under $100.

The Herber is very tough, its at least as difficult as the Hubbard. I'd call that one my "White Whale" because I have all the other Packers from that year except that one. I've been looking for the Herber for over 10 years and I've only seen two. One I saw before I knew how tough it is and got outbid, and the other was in NM condition and they wanted more than I felt it was worth. If you decide to sell, I'd appreciate a chance to make an offer. Here's a link to a page where I have the others Packers scanned.

I assume you sold it off ebay since you ended the auction? Hopefully you did well. Do you mind asking how much you got for it?
