25th ASE Flag Label selling more than Mercanti?

This doesn't make sense to me...shouldn't the signed version be worth more?

So far, several of my non-FS regular blue labeled coins have sold for more than either the FS Flag or the Mercanti signed labels.

Many collectors want holders that will match the rest of their collections. When you're looking at coins graded 69 and/or 70, it seems the labels can be just as important, maybe more important than the coin itself! So it's no surprise that the FS Flag label might get more interest and price than a new different label that collectors didn't ask for. Similarly, it didn't surprise me that my non-FS labels got more than many FS and Mercanti labels since at the time I was the only one selling them on eBay, yet many collectors seemed to want them over the FS and Mercanti labels which are available by the hundreds.

They should stop Mercanti from signing anymore sets. Too much of his signature in the market is not good for that particular set IMHO.WHat do you thinkimage

You can't make a valid comparison until after the marketplace has also been flooded with flag sets and both labels have had a chance to stabilize. Drawing conclusions right now is silly.

I am with you on this one. The flood should be arriving very soon.

    ...version of the slab?

They have the same coins in them.

Guess it depends on what you place value.

any suggestions on how to search on just those, i can hardly find any. (really for comparison, as I have a set to move)

    PCGS - non-first strike. 70,69,68,69,69.

Almost all of my sales are not showing in the completed listings yet as I listed multiple coins in each listing as buy it now/best offer. If I have taken a best offer, it doesn't show until all coins in the listing have sold. I've also sold a few outside of eBay which don't show up either.

The other thing I've noticed is a lot of flags being sold as singles and not sets. And the flag sets are mixed grade. Although certainly not many have hit yet for sure. In the end I"m betting on the mercanti's as that is all I've bought.

I'm going to speculate a little bit hear - it certainly is an interesting market

"Flags" are being sold by the little guys that got only a few 70s out their miserable regular submission (s)

They also being bought by the same crowd who missed some of the 70 grades to complete their 70s sets

They are paid by the money made by flipping proceeds of their grading and since most of the individual submitters still made some money they don't mind to pay a few extra easy-made hundreds to complete their loved sets image

I feel it's in some way "social justice" to allow the little guys to catch up on their slower shipped/lower graded/lesser number of 70s efforts image

I think Mercanti is going to sign as many labels as are put in front of him because there are orders for them and an extra stash of signed labels for any future orders.

I think too, that the non-Mercanti label variations flood will begin soon and the price cutting wars will begin amongst private sellers. There will be plenty of private sellers willing to sell for less, just like some of the dealers.

    Ask yourself "why?".
Seriously. What value does it bring?
    Do they look nice?
Do they allow for set continuity?
Do they bring to mind a certain superior quality mindset?

I think they should sell for less, to most folks.

Long term the Mercanti is the better label. However, at first there were no flag labels. Some people wanted them. Some people got very eager. Prices went up. Not sure how many flag labels there will be so it might persist. --jerry

Jerry: I can assure you it will likely not persist too much longer as I am getting in a batch of flag coins next week!

Think I'll start up a slab label grading service. I could have some cool gimmicks like "First Printed". Is the print type too jagged? Genuine for you then. Now to design a slab for the labeled slab to fit in.... image

Really? Most folks think they should sell for less?

I guess it depends on if you are buying or selling.

The flag insert offers a more attractive presentation for the coin.
It would be worth more to me as a collector then to have these coins housed in them.

Even when you quoted me, you got the quote wrong.
Do you see where I said "I"? I did not say "most folks think they should sell for less", now did I?

You did leave out the part of my quote where I asked the questions, but, I expect that...it helps you to leave out pertinent items, right?

Doesn't seem to depend on whether one is buying or selling but rather they are being real or believing their hype.

Nope, you said this, from your post -

<< I think they should sell for less, to most folks. >>

    Note the capitalized letter "I".

I think that means "I", no?

You are making a distinction without a difference.

Guess I'm in the minority here but I really like the tombstones. They are a simple no nonsense label. No mistaking them for something they are not. There are coins in Mercantis and Flags galore, both from the set and not from the set. Have to read the fine print & make sure the label says "set". Easy to confuse with other coins not from the set. Only the tombstones offer a label that tells it like it is on the very top line of the holder. That's important for old duffers like me whose eyesight isn't as sharp as it once was. image

Besides, they look pretty darn good in the OGP :

Laugh if you will, but a simple label puts emphasis on the coin and not on some fancy signature or questionable first strike pronouncement.

I prefer the Mercanti and the tombstone labels just because it distinguishes the five coins as a set. The blue labels only include the additional word "set". Perhaps PCGS could have done something with the blue background, such as using a stylized "25" like NGC did, that would have kept the uniformity of the blue labels while distinguishing the set.

I don't collect the ASE as a series. I don't have a particularly affinity for the flag labels as I have coins in both NGC and PCGS slabs, some ER/FS, some not, and many that are just in OGP. So that might be why the flags don't do anything for me.

Funny because I showed my wife all the coins in the set pictured above and asked her which one has the most "satiny" look. I explained to her that Uncirc collector coins have a satin look to them....well guess which one she picked to have the most satin look. Yeah she picked the bullion coin image
