Searching though a few mixed pounds and found key date

Now if this were only a US minted key date from this era....wow. Really starting to understand how many world coins seem under valued.

Coin was a 1839 Russian 10 Kopek with mintage of 350,000. Maybe worth $10 on a good day.

You said a "few mixed pounds" and I thought you were talking about modern UK 1-pound coins. image

Bulk cherrypickin' is a blast, ain't it? And you must have had a pretty good mixture to get something so early-dated, let alone a better date.

local dealer doesnt do anything with world coins so I worked a deal where I buy anything and everything he gets in world coin wise. That includes silver...I couldnt beleive it when I found a Kiangnan Prov China Silver Dollar. Still have it too, has one large and several small chop marks to it.

That's what got me started collecting farthings. While at my local B&M in Nashville a few years back, I was waiting for Mike to finish with another customer, so I started picking through his 25cent box and found a really nice 1773 GeoIII farthing. I thought "If this were an EAC from the same time frame it would be at least $75-$100 in this condition." Then I realized these WERE legal tender in America back then.

It wasn't long before I was putting together a set. Now they're my main focus.

My best pick out of poundage was a Bechler Gold Dollar. I almost missed it too! They look quite brassy and I tossed it in the token pile to only go back 3 coins latter thinking wait a minute! I have no idea where or what group it was in as I used to let it pile up before I would go through it. Was a nice problem free example also!!!!

I love doing the mixed world coins. I would say, not counting Canada, roughly 95% of my world collection came from doing the mixed pounds. Let's see...I did a pound for myself in 2008, I got three pounds for Christmas in 2009, 1 pound for Christmas 2010, and I used a Paypal gift card from my mom to nab a 5-pound lot off ebay, which arrived 12/30/10. Then in January of this year I bought almost a pound of pre-1900 coins from Ajaan. That was cool. Especially as I don't, err, didn't have a whole lot from the 1800s.

I have not found anything really spectacular, two minor errors- but very cool to me even though everyone else says they are "worthless". Bah. I don't do this to sell them, I do it because it's fun. And to make my collection larger.

The oldest I've gotten, from all those lots combined, but from ajaan is from 1766, but it's worn so smooth I couldn't ID it on my own. Luckily a specialist saw it and recognixed it, because it's identifying characteristics mostly gone. It was a one-year type.

Not counting the lot I bought from Ajaan, the oldest I found was from 1893, in the first bag I bought myself back in 2008. French 10 centimes.
