I RECEIVED THE NEW ***CHERRYPICKERS' GUIDE*** TODAY! ...with initial Merc Dime Review

keyman64keyman64 Posts: 15,650 ✭✭✭✭✭
A review will be posted later....but right now I already see problems. image

Back in the Spring I offered REAL DEAL pricing info on Mercury Dime Varieties and it was not desired. What better info than from someone that has been building THIS SET for the past 1.5 years now. I have bought these things, sold these things and watched a ton of other auctions. There are a ton of blanks of "N/A" for pricing info for varieties....this is simply not true. I have the info. Oh well. Some photos have been improved which is good.

New listings for Mercury Dimes:
1934-D/D FS-501 - Neat Variety new to me. I can't wait to find one.
1940-S FS-901 Coneca DDO-002 paired with Coneca DDR-001 / Wexler WDDO-001, WDDR-001 (I have already found this one in ANACS MS66...it is stunning!!!)
1942-S Inverted S - Neat Variety
1945 DDO - On par with other DDOs in the series

Why the 1934-Large D and Small D are not listed is beyond me. They have all of the large 'S' coins for the series but this coin continues to be left out of the book.
The photo of the 1937 DDO is TERRIBLE and only shows the initials which is NOT the easiest way to 'pick the variety.

More Info Later....

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

Varieties are very difficult to price. Huge price swings as the first 1 or 3 show up in the pops vs. after all the variety collectors for that particular series are satiated.

The pricing in this volume is far from perfect, many prices seem way too low.

For now... I do look forward to other coins when I am done with this, that's for sure! You aren't kidding, these varieties are tough...and looking for them for a few hours straight at one show can give you a pretty good headache even with a 20x loupe.

    Greg,

Here is a 1934-D/D is it the same one as the one in the book?

    image

Here is a 1942-S Inverted S. (This one is in a PCGS holder, so I only need to send it back for attribution once we find out if they are adding it to the set).

I'm surprised so many are looking for pricing in a book like this.

I'd rather see something like relative rarity over pricing.

of course, I'm the new one to this....

I pretty much agree with you. These books don't get updated often enough to have accurate pricing anyway. A coin like the 1941 DDO seems to be rare in any grade (only 3 graded to date at PCGS), yet people think it is common. If it was common there would be more.

I probably won't get my book for a few weeks through my wholesaler, but it will be interesting to see what is new.

I AGREE! It all depends upon demand when an example comes up for sale and how high end the example is...Population numbers at the 3 grading services would be good but they would probably have to pay for the data in order to include it in the book.

If they are going to include pricing data then it should be as accurate as possible. That's my point with that. POP DATA/RARITY could certainly help things a long way.

Thanks, Greg, two down and two to go. (Possibly one if I can find my 45 DDO which is attributed in an ANACS small white holder).

Yes, but obviously the Mercury Dimes are the most important in the book! image

The Treasure Hunting Mercury Dimes book by John A. Wexler and Kevin Flynn have a ton of better photos but the book is larger and dedicated to Mercs so that is kinda expected...but the book is also from 2005. It is a great complimentary resource.

No, we are a very serious bunch. image The Mercs are most important and somehow there are a lot of issues in the section. Oh well.

I think I have three of the four new ones. It is going to be tough not to have a 100% complete set for a while. image

Tony - I can't tell for sure if your 1945 matches the new 45 DDO or not. The pic in the book is low grade and does not show good.

Do you know if that is the one in the CPG? That doesn't match wddo001 or wddo002 from Treasure Hunting Mercury Dimes. I think from what others have said the CPG matches wddo002 from Treasure Hunting Mercury Dimes.

I thought the 1945 DDO that was to be added to the CP Guide, was the CONECA DDO-002. You might want to try this link. The pictures that I posted earlier were not mine and I didn't have permission to use them so I took them down. Sorry.

There seems to be differing number with the various attributors. I guess I won't know until I get the book in hand.

I think in the first post to this thread, they were talking about the 40-S that is in the Cherrypickers' Guide was linked to the WDDO-001 or WDDR-001.

I think that is the big mystery for every series. It will be interesting! Another question is how long will it take to happen. image

I think there is the possiblity that the 1940 S and 1945 are too minor. I am surprized by the 1945 choice there are two coins with better doubling. They choose the weakest? image
