How??

How in the world did this card get an 8? I'm selling a well centered Howard and looked the card up on VCP to see its history. $70-$80 lately, except for the one that sold for $3.80, had to click on the image to see why it went so low. Quality like this also tends to skew the VCP numbers

From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

Yeah, if I send that card in, 99 times out of a 100 I get either an 8 OC or a straight 6.

  • The only logical explanation I can think of is the submitter requested no qualifiers, and the card graded as 10, minus 2 points for the O/C qualifier.

i tink the more logical explanation is they got it right and forgot to add the qualifier.

as it would be with certain sellers on eBay these days, it gets pushed as what the flip says and it's up to the buyers to decide.

i agree with bbuck on the assessment of skewed VCP numbers which appear on their website as legit sales until you actually go to the auction and view the item.

That's not how it works. When you request NQ, they don't just drop you a couple of grades; they start dropping grades until they find a grade where the card can meet the criteria. For this card to follow that logic, it would have to appear 70/30 to the grader in order to land in an 8 holder. That card MIGHT be 80/20, which would drop it to a 6 before it could meet the criteria for a grade.

mechanical error, the OC was left off the flip

A thread from a few days ago on this very same subject was taken down by the board monitor. If I produced something like that, I would appreciate the opportunity to fix it. PSA elects to forgo this opportunity. "Behold our product!"

Threads like the other day get taken down because people make some pretty damning accusations based solely on small result sets.

None of my prior posts included 'damning accusations' of any sort yet the comments were removed by the monitor. My sense is that the prior thread was removed because PSA was embarrassed by the grading example presented. Reasonable people understand that mistakes will sometimes occur in something as subjective as card grading. The issue is that PSA makes no attempt to correct obvious grading errors. bbuckner22 has provided another example. - Kevin

No attempt?? Won't they regrade any item that you send in with a complaint that it is overgraded? Seems like I've read about that here more than once.

I think the submitter asked for no qualifier. Otherwise would have been a 10OC! image

I'd say it's a labeling error. I remember a '72 Bench IA PSA 8 that had similar centering. I also remember a Bob Gibson (I think it was a '68) that was graded either 'MINT 7' or 'NM 9', I don't recall which way it was.

It happens. It shouldn't, but it does.
  • cards651cards651 Posts: 665 ✭✭
bking - I was not aware of the option to re-grade. That is definitely a great option. I really do not keep up on everything but perhaps PSA should let this be more widely known. - Kevin

Doesn't VCP already take into consideration that the lowest priced example and the highest
are automatically voided, so as to not skew the average?

    Good for you.
