Got 'er done! (1955 Topps Baseball, my first completed registry set)

After 7+ years, I have finally completed my first registry set: A modest 1955 Topps Baseball Set in all PSA 4 through PSA 6 (with a PSA 7 or two sprinkled in). The first card was obtained on July 24, 2004 (#88 Chuck Harmon). The final card was obtained just this past week from fellow board member Gary (relaxed), a SWEET #192 Jim Delsing.

Thanks to the following board members who contributed to this set: RipublicanInMass, relaxed, probstein123, bluemarlin, 1954, Bkritz.

You can view the set here: Tom's 1955 Topps Baseball

Thanks for looking.

Congrats...nice job. I am down to needing only four cards to finish mine but they are tough to come buy. Great set.

Great job. I always admire collectors who have the patience to build up a set over several years.

Niiiice! Congratulations! image I don't have many '55Ts, but I really like the design from that year. That had to be fun searching those cards out.

Coincidentally, I started my '62T set in 2004 also and finished just a year ago. Way to stick to it!

Congrats Tom!!! Outstanding work. You have put alot of work into that set and now you can sit back and admire the fruits of your labor. You were a huge help when I started building my set, and I thank you for all you did. Your set gives meaning to the phrase "buy the card, not the holder". Great job, my friend!

  • Congratulations Tom! 1950's cards are the ultimate (IMO) so anytime anyone completes a set it should be celebrated.

Do you store them or display them? I'm always curious to know...and being a smaller, horizontal set...I think they would look fantastic displayed.

    detroitfan2,

First congratulations, always nice to get that last card !!

Having once had the 14th best set in the Registry, I thought I'd attach a pic of that set...not to brag, just to show you how really sweet the set looks when displayed in a nice case. I built the case from scratch and put it together in a weekend. After playing with the math, I found that 15 cards across, times 14 rows, just happens to equal a very convenient 210. If you seek the 4 missing cards, the case fleshes out perfectly as you can see.

If you decide to build a case and need some help, I'd be glad to give you the dimensions I used. MAKE SURE you find a wall that faces north, otherwise your cards will cook in the sun.

  • YES!!!! That was exactly what I had in mind in my post above! Looks awesome!

That's about the coolest display case I've seen on this site!

    Everyone, thanks for the compliments!

KIW, unfortunately I have all my cards simply boxed right now. I forgot to mention that I started finishing my basement prior to starting this set, and while I hit 100% on the set in 7.5 years, I'm holding steady at about 10% on the basement . . .

Someday I would love to have a display like MCMLVTopps, but the basement has to get done first.

I've also been wrestling a lot with where my passions lie in the hobby. Outside of my dad, I don't have too many family members or friends who share my interests . . . which is why I'm thankful for this board.

I've been thinking about thinning the herd a little (or a lot) and maybe focusing on cards only from the Detroit teams.

    Peace,

    Tom

Nice set. I wish I had that one. Maybe one day.
  • Congrats Tom on a job well done. Here's hoping that you enjoy looking at the 55's like I do.
