Ted Williams, Joe Dimaggio, & Cal Ripken Jr Autographed Baseballs - Are these Legit?

I am soliciting the opinions and experience of CU forum members concerning 3 x autographed baseballs here with no COAs for these HOFers: Ted Williams, Joe Dimaggio, & Cal Ripken Jr. The Ted Williams & Joe D are on Bobby Brown balls. What do you think? Legit? No good? Thank you for your help. Meatloaf

  • Why are they all signed with the same pen? That is my first flag.

They are all close but I have no definitive answer. I'd stay away. Looks like they are on the same model/type baseball as well.

This is more than likely not the case. The balls are from different sources. But it does appear this way from the poor photos. Meatloaf

Ted and Joe D - no

Ripken I don't know well enough but I'm sure our resident Cal expert will see this post soon.

The other is certified - and they look very familiar - I stink at this kind of stuff - but it's always fun to contemplate.

If the one on the left is legit, the one on the right is not. the T's i's (missing the dot) a's and s's are not close. (IMO)

Again - the other is certified. They look very similar - and I'll have to say - this is guy singed enough stuff for everyone in the free world to have a copy - so slight variations in the sig are gonna be seen.

I'll let the guys with the better eyes to make the call.

Hi Cory - I agree with that - but I never sign my name exactly the same way - tough stuff.

Here's another - the left is PSA/DNA - and the "s" on the end looks the same. Can't understand why the "dots" are missing? The lighting?

  • Thanks for all these examples and advice. As everyone has noted, this is a tough call. I have doubts, so I think it may be better to pass than waste $10 on a QO. I am going to work the Ripken though. Meatloaf
  • You have to remember that some people look at this on their phone, where the pictures aren't more than an inch.

Looks like the dot for the williams is just on the a like 1 mm or almost touching it.

Edit to add. I think they look ok.

Yes, I have this problem as well. My phone is so old...I need to upgrade, but I am too lazy to do so...or at least that is what my wife tells me...

Yup, I've got one of the newest phones on the market where I can zoom in, but then it becomes pixelated and twice as hard to see.

And as such, they really don't have reason to comment then, do they?

I've learned that with the quality of counterfeiting and the volume of material that these guys have signed, there's little reason to trust anything, even the authenticated material.

My Williams, DiMaggio, Mantle and Mays signed balls all came from signings that I attended and watched the items signed in person... That sort of provenance is worth more to me than a hologram or the opinion of someone making a wild azzed guess.

Very true, but I was too young back when they were signing there a$$e$ off, so I am stuck with this sort of action. Meatloaf
  • I was too young as well... 4 or 5 when Mantle died. I personally don't touch unauthenticated memorabilia, but I gave an opinion which was asked for in the first post. Everyone is entitled to one correct or not. I know I've seen you post less and not as aggressively and I appreciate that.

Thanks for your input. You have always provided quality thoughts on everyone's posts on this forum. My price offering was too low for these items, so they were all sold to someone else. Oh well. Meatloaf
