What are your 2012 Collecting Goals?

I went 1 for 2 on my stated collecting goals for 2011, and Vastly expanded my collecting focus over the year, when I really thought my focus would be on solely Stan Musial after selling off a good portion of my collection in late 2010. So I am hoping 2012 will bring a more defined focus to the four categories below. Let's see what everyone has in store for 2012.

1. Post War HOF RC's
2. Post War Autographed HOF RC's
3. 70's unopened cello packs w/stars on top.
4. High End cards from these guys (Aaron, Mays, Mantle, Clemente, Musial, Williams and Koufax).

    1) Thin out my collection selling off multiple dupicate raw sets
    2) Focus on my Yastrzemski Master Set and move in the top 10.

    In no particular order:
    1) Finish off my raw 1970 Topps Baseball Set
    2) Work on completing my run of unopened boxes through 1975.
    3) Finally pick up that Tom Seaver RC either NM-NM/MT or in PSA 7.
    4) Complete my 1970's cello and rack pack run.

Should be a fun year. image

Any unopened Baseball cello and rack packs and boxes from the 1970's and early 1980s.

... to complete my 2010 collecting goals. Sad, really.
  • I really have only one that Ive recently started to collect.... and it aint nothing compared to what you guys are doing.

Collecting wax racks/cello packs with Jose Canseco on the front. I could find them pretty cheap on eBay but its just a matter of being patient as well. Only one that will be semi tough will be the 86 Donruss and thats only because of price. Right now I think 2 are listed for about $60 or $70 on the front of a wax rack and when I'm only planning to pay $5 and under for the rest, thats gonna be difficult for me to pay that much for Donruss when its time.

Hope you all are having a good weekend so far!

I accomplished my goal of 2010, which was to narrow my entire collection to just one box of cards. I sold off alot of my graded cards in the begining of 2010, and the remaining cards went to board member initialD.
All that remains is a Roop box filled with raw Topps cards from 1952 to 1959. It has been nice not having so much inventory and it freed up alot of space. Also...being focused to just one box has saved me a ton of money.

    I dont have too much planned for 2011, but here are a few things on my list I want to add to my box;

    - mid grade 59 Topps Bob Gibson rookie.
    - mid grade 57 Brooks Robinson rookie.
    - nice looking low grade 52 Topps Andy Pafko.

Pick out 20 star cards from the 1933 goudey set and buy them in PSA 5 or 6. Excluding Ruth, Gehrig, and Lajoie. Actually have 5 already, so just need 15 more.
I usually pick out a dozen stars from a set like I did with 64 topps, but 33 goudey has so many great players that twelve is not enough.

Not sure if I can reach #1 in the Killebrew registry, but realistically want to have the rest of my raw killebrew's graded and see where that leaves me. Unfortunately, my rookie that looked like a PSA 9 came back "Authentic" "Altered" watever that means. So I need the most expensive card in the set.image

Funds are tight so I don't see me finding a rookie. I don't think another raw one interests me so I am looking at several hundred dollars for a 7 or an 8.

Hopefully PSA will be kind to me and I will get good grades on my extras and I can finance my collecting goals through sales of those cards. I am amazed at some of the grades I have gotten, many seem to be 2 full grades low.image

Still having fun with the hobby!image

Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year!

I love these types of threads, keeps me honest and focused on my collecting goals...and they're really fun to see what others are concentrating on.

    My goals are as follows:

    1. Complete my Mathews Master set and move to #1. (this should be done soon actually, aside from the 54 Canadian that I just can't seem to locate).
    2. Complete Teixeira Basic Set.
    3. Get my Teixeira Master set to 40%.
    4. Complete my Bob Feller mid-grade Basic Set and finish this display frame I'm working on for it.
    5. Get my 1969 Topps set up to 10% in 8.5 or higher - this will be a 6-7 year long project that I'm starting on.
    6. Obtain a 57 Brooks Robinson in 8 or better.
    7. Obtain a 67 Rod Carew in 8 or better.
    8. Obtain a 54 Aaron 6 or better.

    Side/Subgoals:
    1. I'd like to upgrade my 52 Mathews to a 4 or better.
    2. Finish misc Silver Slug/Gold Glove sets.
  • To buy four or five well-centered PSA graded '56 Topps cards with my EBay bucks in January...... then not spend another cent on cards until the 2013 National.

    Good luck to me.

I did my consolidating last year by selling off my modern duplicate rookie collection and spending that money on a vintage "All Time Greats" rookie collection in low/mid grade.

Here are the singles that I am still missing, so I will try and knock of as many as possible this year:

    1957 Topps Bart Starr
    1957 Topps Johnny Unitas
    1958 Topps Roger Maris

    Awesome thread!

    Derek Jeter Basic Set
    Mariano Rivera Basic Topps Set

My collecting goal for 2012 is to try and complete the Derek Jeter Basic set on the registry. I doubt this will happen in 2012 though I will try. I still need 27 PSA 10 cards to say the set is complete. I would like to finish the Mariano Rivera Basic Topps set on the registry as well. This one might be possible in 2012. I am only missing 3 PSA 10 cards 1998, 2004, and 2007.
  • i am NEVER good at these type of "lists"! LOL

    Continue to add to my:

    PSA Post-WWII HOF RC Set
    PSA George Brett Set
    PSA Thurman Munson Set
    PSA Mike Schmidt Set

I spent yesterday and this morning trying to get my "mess" organized while listening to a little Guns N Roses, Nirvana and Iron Maiden. The music helped me get out my frustration of dealing with the disorganization. I have so much stuff that I am not interested in anymore but didn't want to sell......yet I never look at it and if it was gone tomorrow, I wouldn't miss it. I finally decided to set a few goals:

1.) Get organized and sell off the stuff I don't want anymore
2.) Finish off my 59 Topps BB set in Ex/Mt (PSA 6) or better
3.) Upgrade the remainder of my 60 Topps set to PSA 7 (99% are commons)
4.) Work on my un-opened collection. Would like to have at least 2 wax/racks/cellos from each year of BB from 72-80.

    Upgrade my current Football sets.

  • I'm still trying to complete my 1956 Topps set...I only need 32 cards. But some of the cards I need are big stars (Williams, Clemente, Snider Berra, etc), which I prefer to have in PSA holders for my own piece of mind. They are not cheap.

Trying to save as much as I possibly can for my daughters future is getting in the way of finishing...but I will get there eventually.

My other goal is to sell off every single card that has no sentimental value to me. I'd like my entire collection to be comprised of the complete sets I collected growing up and one box of Star/Rookie cards. I don't want anything else.

Still working on my primary goal - 1970 Topps Baseball in 8 or better. Doing the master set, as I got lucky on some checklists a while back. I'm currently #15 on the current Master, sitting at 79% with a grade just a tick under 8.

As much to keep me from getting too carried away with chasing that set as for any pure collecting purpose, I also started a vintage Cowboys set and a 1970's Rangers set, both very much in their infancy, to go along with my vintage World Series Set. I hope to complete at least one of these this year, and to continue to TRY and focus and sets/memories from my childhood.

For 2012, I'll make completing my Quest for 3000 (acquiring insert cards serial numbered with every number from 1 to 3000) my primary goal. I'm a little over 400 cards there so far. I highly doubt I'll get it done within a year. The high numbers (especially everything over 2000) will be tough.

I'll also make acquiring at least 75 more serial numbered Jerry Porter rookies or rookie parallels and at least 20 more Jerry Porter autographs a goal. Those 2 are doable - I believe I got to the 20 autos this year and didn't fall far short on the rookies.

I plan on working on my 1956-1985 top 30 Topps PSA graded baseball cards (not including all-stars, team leaders etc) from each year. I have completed 1959-1966, 1968-1985. I still need 13 from 1956, 20 from 1957, 9 from 1958 and 1 from 1967 (Tom Seaver). Hopefully, I can get the Seaver and finish 1958.

    I am also working on 1957 to 1986 football. The top 18 from 1957 to 1961, top 24 from 1962 to 1967 and the top 18 from 1968 to 1986. I have completed 1960, 1964 and 1968-1979. I am nearly complete with 1961 Topps, 1963, 1966, 1967 and 1968. Hopefully, I can knock off 1961, 1963, 1966, 1967, 1980-1983 this year. I would like to finish 1965, but I probably won't get the Namath this year.

    1964 Topps Football
  • I must say I more than completed my 2011 goals so I will probably slow down for 2012. I was trying to go from 185 of the top 250 sportscards to 200 of the top 250, and I actually ended up at 217/250. I also put together raw sets (1957,1961,1967-1976).

This year I am going to work on upgrading my 1911 c55 set and my 1935 Chicle set.

Finally, I would like to add to my top 250 set. I think I will try to get to 224/250. I know that is only seven cards, but they have become extremely expensive. I want to add T3 Cobb, T205 Cobb, 1952 topps Mathews, 1952 Topps Mantle, 1932 Caramel Gehrig, 1932 Caramel Ruth, and 1933 Sport Kings Ruth. If I am lucky I will pick up 1888 n28 Anson and n162 Anson.

Happy New Year, and good luck to everyone trying to reach their goals this year.

In December 2010 I started a project around the Milwaukee Brewers. I have a run of every Topps Brewer card from 1971-now. So I decided it was time to do it graded.
I did my raw run years ago and thought they were mint. When I dug them out a year ago, I realized they were not nearly as nice as I thought they were. So 1971 is PSA 7 or better and the 1972-1982 is PSA 8 or better. I have not started 1983-now.

Here are my completion stats after 1 year:

    1971 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 36.67%
    1972 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 92.86%
    1973 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 73.08%
    1974 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 100.00%
    1975 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 96.15%
    1976 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 94.12%
    1977 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 76.92%
    1978 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 89.29%
    1979 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 48.15%
    1980 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 48.28%
    1981 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 43.75%
    1982 Topps Milwaukee Brewers 56.25%

About March 2011 I decided to add 1956-1965 Milwaukee Braves to the mix. All PSA 5 or better. Here are those stats:

    1956 Topps Milwaukee Braves 13.04%
    1957 Topps Milwaukee Braves 32.00%
    1958 Topps Milwaukee Braves 7.69%
    1959 Topps Milwaukee Braves 15.00%
    1960 Topps Milwaukee Braves 75.00%
    1961 Topps Milwaukee Braves 28.57%

I also decided to build a PSA 5 or better set of 1960 Topps baseball, I am at 36.54% complete

So for 2012 I want to continue building these projects out and hopefully complete the Brewers run.

In 2011 I did finish my 1986-87 Fleer basketball graded set. Also completed the sticker set.

So I got a good chunk of my goals done in 2011

Hopefully I can say the same for 2012.

After those four National League games, Gorman Thomas was never the same, and neither were the Brewers, and come to think of it neither was I.

  • Continue building my HoF RB display. I'll be looking for PSA,BVG,SGC items from all 44 HB/FB in the HoF to date. Good luck to everyone hunting in 2012.
