Philly Show This Weekend - dealers not allowed to set up

Not sure how well published this has become, but the promoter, Hunt Auctions, is apparently not permitting dealers who setup at the recent show in Oaks to also setup at the show this weekend. This decision would prevent several large dealers from attending.

Personally, I feel this is inappropriate and does nothing but hurt the quality of the show. In my opinion, the show has deteriorated severely since it was in Fort Washington and this decision is going to make the show even worse. Therefore, I will not be attending any further Philly Shows until this practice is changed.

Here is a thread on Net54 about the issue:

Over a year ago I heard they were pressuring dealers not to attend the Oaks show. I didn't the show was anything special even before they started kicking dealers out. Sure, there were always deals to be had but you probably do about as well just sitting on ebay for a weekend. I'd go if I were local but it's not worth a long haul.

I'm not a member of Net....what exactly is going on? There was a show last weekend in Oaks and one this weekend in Philly both by the same promoter?

Memory Lane notified its followers that they aren't allowed to attend the philly show this weekend because they attended a different philly show last month. Different promoters. The presumption is that other dealers who attended Oaks were told the same thing.

What is Hunt thinking? Bad business. I need Charlie Manuals autograph though so I will be attending on Saturday.

Is Hunts owned by Netflix? That would explain a lot.

I agree that the Hunt show was better in Reading. What is the Oakes show like? I've never been to one.

Most of the dealers that used to do the Fort Washington and Reading shows are still around but it became unprofitable for them to set up at the Valley Forge show. The variety of dealers is what made those shows a success and why so many card collectors attended those shows even when there was seldom ever any autograph guests of note. Valley Forge brought jacked up table fees, made it all about expensive autograph guests, and the card collectors and dealers you liked to see started vanishing with each new show. The Oaks show will have dealers that can't afford to do the Valley Forge show and the opportunity for collectors to look at some cards rather than table after table of big auction houses looking for consignments...with Hunts right up front of course.

I never returned to Philly Show (FT WAshington) since 1988.At that time it was like attending another National only a smaller version with only one or two autograph guests mostly Old Phillies.I hold very many great memories from that show.

I've had dealer friends tell me they prefer the Oaks show because the table fees are much lower and they can actually make $ at the end of the weekend......For the most part, the show attracts the same crowd

This will be interesting this weekend. I have attended both shows recently and spoke to some dealer friends and yes the table fees are less expensive as Oaks.

This is the Oaks show- http://www.csashows.com/

The Philly Show( Valley Forge Conven Ctr)- http://www.phillyshow.org/

The CSA show bills 707 Sportscards as the host or go to dealer for their event, now Hunt isnt going to allow them to set up at Valley Forge???

One would think that 707 is a bit of a powerhouse in the hobby community, a lot of ties and connections with other dealers, etc. Now they are going to be shunned, among others....?

The 707 website doesnt have the Philly show on their roster...... http://www.707sportscards.com/WhoAreWe.htm#show and they are not on the list of dealers at phillyshow.org.

I think I am going to sit Philly out this week.

Has anyone seen the construction chaos at the Valley Forge Convention Center and the parking lots??? They are building a new "slot" casino there. Wow, good luck with the parking this weekend!!

Parking was bad at the last show as well. You needed to walk completely through the hotel to get to the show. I'm interested to see if SGC is still permitted to set up. They are still on the list of dealers on the Philly Show website, as is Memory Lane. 707 and a few others though have been removed. In my opinion, they are going to not allow those vendors to set up, they should immediately have removed them from the list of dealers so that no one thinks the dealer will be there.

Just looking at the booth assignments on the website, there is no one listed for tables 405-409, 511-516, 610-615, 702-708, 901-903, 1010-1013. If I counted correctly, that's 31 empty tables in the middle of the room, and I'm only counting blocks where 3 or more tables are unaccounted.

x2drich2000 do you remember the stellar move Hunt had last year when they scheduled the Card Show on the same weekend as the Gun Show?

Consider about 1000 extra cars in an already packed lot. I sent an email ( which I never do) to both Hunt and the Convention Center on that one!

Your right the smart thing to do is to park on the opposite side and walk through the hotel....I figured I wasnt the only one with that idea!

The decision to ban dealers was definitely not too well thought out. But that's what happens when a dealer/auction house is running the show for themselves as opposed to experienced show promoters who makes decisions based on what puts on the best show for everyone in attendance. Short term the 31 less tables means less competition for the dealer running the show. Long term it's 31 more reasons for the customers to not come back again.
