Ok - I really do love the vintage football. But this is a different vintage football item. It is a game program. I recently picked up an AAFC game program from October of 1947 from the New York Yankees and the Chicago Rockets. It has Elroy Hirsch in it and a few other names you might recognize, but the significance of the program is the game it actually represents. On that night, Spec Sanders of the Yankees put on one of the greatest performances in pro football history. He carried the ball 24 times for 250 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 28-7 Yankees victory. He was removed from the game in the third quarter with the Yankees ahead 28-0 at the time. The pro football record for most yards rushing in a game at the time was 215 yards by Cliff Battles. 250 yards wasn't achieved in the NFL until OJ Simpson did it in 1973. Spec Sanders rushed for 1432 yards that season (another pro football record), rushed for 18 touchdowns (yup, a record), threw for 1442 yards as a quarterback with 14 touchdown passes, punted 46 times for a 42.1 average, and led the league in kick returns (including a 92 yard touchdown). He also found time to intercept three passes while playing defense. If you think Spec Sanders is just a figment of the AAFC, you might check out the NFL record for most interceptions in a season. Until it was broken by Night Train Lane, Spec Sanders held the NFL record for single season interceptions with 13 in a 12 game season. And this was after he had missed a season due to knee surgery and was 31 years old.
Of course, the NFL does not recognize the AAFC's records because they are viewed as an inferior league. With such pitiful guys as Otto Graham, Marion Motley, Lou Groza, YA Tittle, Elroy Hirsch, Joe Perry, Frankie Albert, Len Ford, Bill Willis, etc... it is easy to see how inferior the AAFC was. But anyway, this game was the biggest rushing performance at a major pro football level for many years and I am glad to have brought it into my collection.
