What to do?

I bought these pair of uniface Swiss Shooting Plaques on Ebay Germany given the fabulous design and size (120mm).

Seller described these in German (I used translator) as silver. They seem to be aluminum.

Note the William Tell shooting at the apple on the boy's head. kinda neat assuming he doesnt miss.

I paid a fair amount, yet not crazy.

Would you:

1) Keep
2) Return
3) Sell

Very light weight (aluminum like). How could I tell if its WM?

Hmm. What is the weight in grams? What is the diameter? And what is the thickness? -Dan

Diameter is 120mm. Relatively thin, reverse of medal has a velvet like base to it. Per seller's weight 62 grams each.

The brownish toning leads me to believe that they are not aluminum unless they have been "antiqued". I've seen low content silver (billon) with that look but never aluminum.

Could they be hollow castings which make them light weight?

Billon alloy: 2 to 40% silver content

density=mass/volume. The density of aluminum is 2.70 g/cc. We know the weight and the diameter. We also know what the density of aluminum is. In order for it to be aluminum the medal should be at least 2.1 mm thick. -Dan

That's great info. How should I measure thickness given the hollow plaque?

Well if it is hollow then it cannot be aluminum. I have to agree with Gene that this does not look like aluminum. Aluminum keeps its silver color. Can you post a picture of the back?

That looks like silver to me. The density of silver is 4 times that of aluminum. I can see that being almost 2 ounces including the weight of the felt. -Dan

Thanks much Dan. I think 62 grams is around 2 ounces. Feels light relative to massive size.
