REALLY cool vintage vintage finds..help me ID one please!

The first picture is the one I need ID help with. These are approx. 5x7 (shot in the dark estimate) and they are obviously black and white photos with nothing on the back, no year, producer, not nothing. I am assuming they are not rare, but I have a whole set of them with all the stars of the 50s and early 60s. Anyone know what these are?

This is one of the cooler finds (Even though they are beat up):

Getting cooler...

And this one is my favorite and probably the rarest.:

My question for this panel is, how rare do you think it is? All of the panels I have seen have 10 players on them and all of the cards have the same orientation(reading left to right). What is the story for this particular panel? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Hal

Very neat items. I love the Union Oil books, I have the Bill Russel and a few others. The item you are asking about look like picture packs, but those were issued by team, not by a "stars" set. This is a link to the one with your Mantle:

  • The 5x7 black and white photos are jay publishing photos. They were sold as picture packs, usually in sets of twelve photos by team.

  • Jay Publishing Inc. was a subsidiary of Big League Books, Inc of New Canaan, CT, both of which were owned by John Jackson, Jr. (hence the "Jay" in Jay Publishing.)
They produced 5x7 black & white Baseball, Football & Hockey photos from 1955 until John's death in an American Airlines plane crash in the fall of 1965.
The photos were sold by team, 12 to a pack and could be ordered from the company, purchased at the ballpark and were even available in Grocery stores and at newsstands.

just wanted to add the Mathews and Mantle Jay Pub Pics are known as "Type 1" (sans serif font) and were sold from 1958-61.
If you have any with a serif style font (fancier style font), they are "Type 2" and were from 1962-65. They are extremely common and still often found in their original team set bags of 12.
common players book for $3 NRMT, most HOFers $10-$20, but they often dont sell for anywhere near book price...

the 1958 Union 76 Sports Club booklets book for $15 commons (NRMT), to $35 for Banks, Snider, etc.

the 1961 Post panel is the best item you have by far, the Virdon is a scarcer card and books for $40 cut, the rest are common (ie not scarce) and book for $4 (Diamond Jim and Marv) to $10+ (Roberts), $25+ (Spahn)

10 card panels you mentioned are not from the cereal boxes, they are from the mail in offer and are on thinner card stock, your panel of 5 is scarcer and is from the back of a cereal box.

That Mathews on the top left is a 58-62 Type 1 Jay Publishing - Kneeling with Glove variation.

You also have some 1962 Stamps in an album there.

As far as the Post uncut panel, it looks to be 1961.

    Neat odd-ball lot.

<< <i>I'd be interested in the Mathews if it pulls a 6 or higher. >>

I don't think these issues are worth grading

Maybe grade the Mantle and Williams, in reality they are too cheap and common to have graded IMO ....but I have seen higher grade slabbed ones sell for dumb $$ compared to them Raw.

    Up to you.

The Mathews to me is worth grading as I need it for my Mathews Master Registry set. See link in sig. Though, I usually buy those raw and send them in on my own.

As far as the rest, probably not. As stated, I could see Mantle and Williams being worth it as most memorabilia is fairly easy to move for them.
