Top post war 100 Rookie cards all sports

Good for a new book.

Comments

  • I'll fire the opening shot with some of my favorites (I am taking some liberty with which is considered a "true" rookie).

    No particular order:

    1. Alex Rodriguez '94 SP foil -- Who wouldn't want a 9.5 beauty?
    2. Steve Young '84 Topps USFL -- (flashback to 1990) "Why would I trade for him? He's only a backup?"
    3. Michael Jordan '86-87 Fleer -- owned a few as a teenager, but who wanted basketball cards??
    4. Thurman Munson 1971 Topps -- the use of the portrait style and the trophy just works for me
    5. Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps -- self explanatory
    6. Billy Ripken 1989 Fleer -- Sorry, this is a family site.
    7. Jerome Walton '89 UD extended -- Why we chased so hard after that card is beyond me

Some of your rookie cards are funny. To start my quest I have started with Joe Orlando's Top 200 Sports cards. Rookies Found 42 Baseball, 14 Basketball, and only 25 Football. Need More help with Football and Hockey.

ZBob - for hockey, I'd go with the rookies of Maurice Richard, Gordie Howe, Red Kelly, Jean Beliveau, Bobby Hull, Terry Sawchuk, Bobby Orr, Mike Bossy, Wayne Gretzky, Ray Bourque, Steve Yzerman, Mario Lemieux, Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, and Jaromir Jagr.

Have 1 slot for baseball from top 250 list. 1965 topps Joe Morgan #16. Or 1966 Topps Jim Palmer #126. Both HOF need 1 please help. Thanks ZBob
  • NickMNickM Posts: 4,895 ✭✭✭
I'd go with Palmer over Morgan. It's a single-player card, which greatly increases its attractiveness.

  • Isn't it funny how we think differently? When I see a rookie card that has multiple players, it reminds me that at this point in that player's career, he was no more highly regarded than the other players on that card. To me, that adds some intrinsic value. But to each his own I guess.

After doing some checks I hade Roger Maris in Top. Only Because he was in Top 100 Sports cards autographs in the DNA site. I have Morgan and Palmer over Roger. Pete Rose Needs to go in before he dies he #1 in my book. Johnny Bench Was the best.

  • 1971 Munson is NOT his rookie....I always thought the 1970 was his ROOKIE?

That is, if, we are indeed talking about ROOKIE cards.
  • DakilloDakillo Posts: 158 ✭✭
The '71 Munson was my submission...if you look at the second post, I admitted to taking some liberty on the actual rookie of a year prior.
  • NickMNickM Posts: 4,895 ✭✭✭
Clemens should be 1984 Fleer Update; Bonds should be 1986 Fleer Update. For football, I'd replace Bruce Smith and Reggie White with the 1955 Topps All-American Don Hutson and the 2000 SP Authentic Tom Brady rookie.

1987 Fleer Bonds will be the card recognized in the Post War RC set as it's also the card recognized in the Top 200/250 sports card sets. Same thing for the Clemens 84 Fleer Update.

Actually, '86 Fleer Update will be the card used in the Post War HOF Rookies set if Bonds ever makes the HOF. '86 Fleer Update is the card used in the Future HOF Rookies set. Agreed '87 Fleer is more desirable, but it's not a rookie.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • For me the top 10 in hockey (if you limit it to 10) would be:
Vezina, Morenz, Howe, Rocket Richard, Sawchuk, Beliveau, Hull, Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux -- you could also replace Lemieux with Plante if you want more vintage content. I just find it hard to limit the list to 10.
Collecting HOF RC's in hockey, baseball, football and basketball. A fool's errand some have said.
