German Coin Experts: I have a double die 1939 Hindenburg. (PICS ADDED)

Solid obverse doubling on the obverse dates and on the mm.

Is this a common piece or a find?

TIA.

Dave

Edited to add: It's a "D" mm

    Is it machine doubling?

ask Guy Franquinet. he is an expert in German coins and also a court appointed and well recognised appraiser there.
it is his speciality. he is quite a talkative fellow. does speak English.
consider the time difference if you call him. it is westcoast time + 9 hours

I thought when it was shadowy it was machine doubling, but when it looks over-the-toppy, it was a dd?

I'll wait on the experts to chime in.

You need a poll---I vote double die.

I see strongly separated serifs so I say it's a doubled die. I also think it's pretty cool.
  • I think these are double dies. I've seen and handled several of these, but they are not well known and there is not much demand for them (hence not much of a premium). I recommend putting as many away as possible, because with a little publicity, demand for these could rise sharply.

It is absolutely a doubled die. Look at the nicely split serifs on the date. Great example.

The doubling of the mint mark is especially impressive.
