What is the mintage for the gold 2008-W $5 Eagle?....is it a low mintage?

coinsarefuncoinsarefun Posts: 21,729 ✭✭✭✭✭
Where can I find the fractional W list of Gold American Eagles.?
Looked through CoinFacts and don't see the final mintages

I'm wondering if the 2008-W $5 gold Eagle had a low mintage?
I think I found one site that states a mintage of 12,657 . Is this worth a premium?

Thanks

12,657. Not the lowest of all AGEs but lowest of all $5 AGEs. Yes, draws a nice premium.

    AGE mintages

Thanks, being graded a MS70 in a PCGS holder would also bring a premium?

Hell I will come right out and ask.........how much is that little ol' thing worth?image

    Thanks for the helpimage

check ebay completed auctions to see what others are paying. I'd do it for you but you need to do some of the work. image

Yes, I did as well as Heritage, no sold prices, only BIN's on Ebay and nothing sold. They were asking around the $450 mark .
Thanks. I will try and figure it out.

    In OGP, probably between $275-$315.

    In MS-69, $265-$300.

    In PCGS MS-70, $410-$450.

Based on ebay results, not considering fees.

NGC sales should give you an idea

I follow nearly every single example of this coin on eBay and have purchased two in the last five or so months. Up to a month or two ago I would have agreed with the prices above. However in the last month I have seen three raw examples close for between $227 to $255, so prices have definitely come down a bit. On some level that's not too much of a surprise as serious modern collectors spent a fortune soaking up 25th anni sets, but I was shocked when I saw the one close for $227ish a few weeks ago. At these temporarily(?) depressed prices I'm a buyer again at any price of $250 or lower for raw or MS69.

I can remember passing up one at the FUN show nearly a year ago for $215 (PCGS ms69). Gold was $1600ish at the time and I remember telling myself $205 was my max. The dealer came down to $215 so I foolishly walked. I won't make that mistake again at the next show that's for sure. Hopefully I'll be able to sell or trade a box or two of my 25th ase sets and trade or buy multiple 2008-W $10s and the '99W's (hopefully both the $5 and $10). That way I won't feel guilty for chasing a modern coin that has already started to run image.

I didn't list the raw coin prices, but they are clearly a level below any of the TPG-graded coins, with a few exceptions. The last auction for a raw coin I have recorded was for $176.50 (rounded to the nearest .25), but I'm sure that I miss a few here and there. I don't follow BIN sales, and I don't record any ebay auction that has less than 3 bids. The biggest drawback my data has is that there is no time frame associated with the prices. Still, it's enough data for what I need - I just like to know what my coins are doing in the market.image

  • It is the lowest mintage of the $5 AGEs and that probably won't be usurped unless the Mint decides to make fractionals again. They are pretty tiny though, so I'm guessing they won't ever have quite the premium as the 2008-W $10.
Successful transactions with keepdachange, tizofthe, adriana, wondercoin

I wonder how that coin was stored? That's a ton of toning on a gold coin that is only 4 years old. As an aside I thought I would bump this post with the last two coins that sold on my watchlist over the last couple of days:

    $376 -- NGC MS70 with OGP (11/20/11)
    $311 -- raw in OGP (11/16/11)

Looks like the dip of a few weeks ago is over image

Yes, I had to pay slightly above, I think there was another that wanted it for the toning as well.

I picked this one up a few months ago.....standard $5 gold but its only slightly toned, no where near the 2008-W
    But....only paid spot price though...lol

If that's a PCGS holder, I believe your toning is due to the holder. I see a lot of gold eagles tone in PCGS and ICG holders but not in other holders. I suspect the paper label is not sealed from the coin and is "gassing" the coin. Common issue with AGEs in those two holders. Often times it will turn the coin a brass color. For this reason I collect AGEs specifically in NGC holders. However, I find the change in color on your particular coin very appealing, unlike others I have seen turn in PCGS holders.

Yes, it is in a PCGS holder, both of the fractional's and the one I posted below.
I thought the toning was due to the alloy mixing and not so much the environment...........but I may be mis informed?

    Love the Sessy Q.

toning of a coins surface is a result of enviornmental affect on the surface whether naturally occuring or artificially induced.

I have all the 1/10 and 1/4 ounce W gold fractionals in self made PCGS 70s except the 2008 W $5 in PCGS MS 69.
