Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Check this out. Same photo, so i would say its not auto-penned, as the sigs are diff. >>

I wasn't even sure where this came from. I couldn't find any postcards like it. According to his description, it was given to the players by the team to honor autograph requests. Very cool, thanks for showing this to me. Still not sure if it's real, but at least I know where it came from. Thanks!

    Edit for spelling...

youll never be sure... unless you got it in person or have a photo of him signing the exact piece. 3rd party is only an opinion and not exact science, there are many collectors who know more than those employed as 3rd Party authenticators.

If I was looking for a Clemente, this would be at the top my list (none higher)

IMO, NOT a single RED FLAG!

I know I'll never be 100% sure, I just wanted some other opinions. I thought it looked good, but since I already bought it, I thought I may have been being biased. Never hurts to get a few other opinions. Thanks for yours!

These 4x6 pictures were issued by the Pirates. Many of the pirates in the 1970s did in fact send them back with autograph requests. Later in the 1970s the Pirates started issuing the same pics with pre-printed signatures using the same process as the Yankees and the Mets did. They obviously look printed, but they were done by a process that gives the impression of a "real" signature.

The Clemente you show is actually signed though, whether by Clemente or not, it's a tough call. I'd lean towards it being OK, but it's worth noting that this picture exists signed as real, clubhouse signed, and outright forgery with many different pen colors too.

Something like this would be worth sending to PSA/DNA or JSA simply due to the value involved should you try to sell.

Sorry, no, I'm not interested in selling it. Thanks for your opinion though!

Thank for the information, I really appreciate it. I have no interest in selling it, but can't decide if I want to get it "authenticated" yet. Thanks for your opinion!
  • You can always go for a quick opinion.

    What is a quick opinion?

I sure as hell am not going to send it to PSA. Just looked up their fees and they charge a different price depending on who it is? How asinine is that!? I'm not going to pay them $150.00 for their "expert" OPINION.

you are openly soliciting opinions here, however, the opinion which may matter most is the one you appear to be ridiculing.

regardless of who you choose, the signature deserves an examination at whatever cost you may believe is affordable or fair.

if you don't seek out a professional/3rd party opinion, you may never know anything other than what you believe.

nothing wrong with that if it's your choice.

Authentication will add value and liquidity to the piece. Although you plan on keeping it at the moment, at some time you may wish to sell. At that time, a reliable 3rd party authentication will make it easier to sell and allow you to realize a significantly higher price.

With regard to the fees, the tiered fee schedule is simple. Some autographs require more stringent examination. Most of the higher priced fees are for autographs that are regularly counterfeited. In addition to the extra examination, there is also a larger increase in realized price with the certification. Accordingly, the 3rd party authenticator is sharing in your increased value. This is similar to the higher priced tiers for grading...

Regardless, congrats on your purchase and hopefully it will provide you with years of enjoyment.

Perhaps I spoke prematurely. When you lay it out like that, I understand it now. I couldn't find any explanation on the PSA site. It's kinda the same thing as autographs. For an autograph on a baseball someone will charge $20 but $75 for a jersey. I used to think "Wow thats stupid, is it harder to sign your name on a jersey than it is a baseball?" Then I realized they do it for the resale value. In any case, thanks for the information!
