they are #2 in power ranking whatever that really means. Smith has looked pretty good since Harbaugh (who brought most his crew from Stanford) and defense is good. Gore will need to be healthy and Akers needs to stay locked.
they will win the worst division in the NFL, but can they play well enough to get a bye week? and win a playoff game?
week 12 @ Ravens and week 15 with Steelers at home are hurdles. the rest of their schedule is soft in there own division.

They will get a bye for sure, playing in that division. 8-1 already, with SEVEN division games ahead.. Assuming Pitt and Balt as losses, they should be a lock for 12-4, which means only the Giants and Saints have a chance to pass them and each would need to go undefeated to do so.
Glad to see Smith has FINALLY gotten a chance to get off the coaching carousel. The kid's good, even if we beat him.

Even if the Niners melt down and drop the remainder of this season they'll probably still win the NFC West and Jim Harbaugh would be the NFC coach of the year. This year was supposed to be a rebuilding year with a shot at winning the division but at 8-1 I'll take it. Before the season started I was predicting a 7-9 year. At this moment it's safe to say this season has exceeded every expectation.
It is amazing what a good head coach can do. We haven't had one of those since Steve Mariucci.
As for the rest of this season, they should have no reason to not win all their division games unless each of those other division teams has that one breakout game like the Rams had against the Saints. Considering how Baltimore has played lately I think the Niners will win that Thanksgiving night game.
As for Alex Smith, I'll admit I've been a vocal Alex Smith hater for at least five years. He has made an amazing turnaround this year. However I am still not convinced he's the quarterback to depend on for the future. He has shown he's capable of leading the offense to score but in terms of quality quarterbacks he definitely isn't in the same league as the most elite and famous quarterbacks in the game today.
Remember in 2005 when Smith was picked in the draft instead of the other guy from Cal? Many including myself felt that was the wrong choice. Last year's Super Bowl brought back horrible memories. As a columnist put it, for a Niners fan watching last season's Super Bowl gave you the same sensation a deadbeat father feels when his kid he abandoned grows up to be successful and famous. Until recently there were always those questions of what ifs.
Even if the 49ers don't make it far in the playoffs this season, this season can be considered a huge success.

<< <i>bking - there are only 5 games vs. the division left, but your point is well taken. Coming off the Pittsburgh game, I can see a loss at Seattle Week 16 for the 12-4 record. It's good to see the Niners back in the mix. I've always been a huge Frank Gore fan (he might be the most underrated back in the league), glad to see he's finally getting some time in the spotlight. >>
All that team needs to be REALLY good is a deep threat.

agree
and also a good reply to my post. to be honest i used to know what every other team's standings as far as possible bye games in NFC playoffs..way back when....
Smith knock-on-wood hasn't been stripped like he used to be every game it seemed like. he can, but is not consistent with throwing a tight spiral.
he's being "allowed" to scramble more, too which is good.
