Pending newp- 1908 Saxony/Jena University 2-mark

I say "pending newp" because this arrived yesterday and I think the owner's ask price is fair, so I'll likely buy it. It was sent along for me to "piggyback" with my next PCGS Darkside submission but once I own it, I dunno whether I'll go ahead and slab it or just flip it over to BST. Technically, I think it's Choice AU rather than UNC, but the "eagle" side certainly looks Mint State. It's only on the "king" side that it's got a tiny bit of rub.

I always thought the Saxony "king with sword on shoulder" designs were cool- I had a 16th century thaler with that design once. I rather like this slightly modernized early-20th century version of it, too.

No- it coulda been, for all I know. Acceptably so, I'd say, if it was.

I've always liked that design. This type is one of the few coins left on my current want list

I'd agree with your choice AU grade assessment. I don't think it looks wiped. Perhaps dipped and retoned?

Nope, no hole. I only do pre-1900 holeys in any event. And now almost never actively holeys them anymore- my vest is pretty full. (Some nice holeys do still manage to find me occasionally, though, which I don't mind.)

Of course I do believe this one will go for far more than the 2 Mark ...

I bought the one in the OP. Fortuitously, the guy who sent it to me decided he liked one of my swapstock coins, so it ended up being a trade rather than cash outta my pocket.

Wow, the 5-mark in the eBay link is awesome looking. I didn't click on it until now.

I'll predict it doesn't go cheaply.

Thats a beauty, never seen that kind before. I wouldnt flip it. It definitely has a thaler look to it.

I could imagine TR with a big stick over his shoulder, for sure.

But, as posted in one of Broadstruck's recent threads, it seems he favored more modern weaponry.

Glad you like the coin LM. I do appreciate the trade and the 1877 half looks great in my 7070. Let me know if you ever send it in, I'm curious what it might grade. For the record I agree with choice AU or possibly MS-62 or 63 because of the obverse. Why is it that so many coins have a premium reverse and a suspect obverse? Great coin and I'm glad it's in good hands.
