Any one here buy this? Australian cent and half cent sets with KEYS including the 1930 Penny!

Wow! This guy did not know what he had. He started the auction at $45 with no reserve and a bad picture in the book and added the solo pics of the 1930 Penny later. This is a very rare coin. He may have gotten even more if he would have had the 1930 in a PCGS or NGC holder. He did also did not state that the 1930 penny was in the set in the auction header. I followed This auction and it was about $450 with 10 hours to go. I guess the 1923 half penny is a rare coin also, but i believe that the 1930 penny is the king of twentieth century Australian coins. I may be wrong on this so correct me if you care to.

<< <i>...Australian cent and half cent sets... >>
There's that peculiarly North American word substitution syndrome happening again... Australia has never issued "half cents". Those coins are pennies and halfpennies, not cents and half cents.
<< <i>The coin album in the auction shows a mintage of 600 for the 1930 penny. Krause says Est 3,000. Either way, that is one incredibly rare penny! >>
The official mintage of the 1930 penny is 0. Zero. Part of the allure of this coin is the mystery of its very existence. The "urban myth" is that they were given away to people who visited the mint. Current consensus as to the most probable explanation of their production is one boxful - 3000 coins - was made, as make-work for the workers the mint was reluctant to sack and in anticipation of an order for 1930 pennies that never came. The box was put in the back of the vault and forgotten until World War II, when the country needed every coin in the vaults rushed into circulation. This theory is backed up by observations that nobody ever found one in circulation until the 1940s.
<< <i>I think it is fairly standard practice to have a fake or copy fill the spot in the album for most collectors. >>
Standard practice for Dansco-style album-users is to fill the hole with something, but many collectors shun using actual fakes, especially unmarked ones. Typically, another date is placed in the slot obverse-first, or a British 1930 penny is substituted instead.
