Seeking information on this cob

I realize that attributing coins by photo is somewhat unscientific, but regardless of that what can you tell me about this cob judging only from the photo? If it helps the weight is 25.3 grams

Thanks in advance!

    Hmm....

I haven't really dabbled in these, but the shield looks to be from Philip III's reign (1598-1621).

I'm guessing the Cross of Jerusalem makes it from Peru, but don't know that for sure. Where are all the cob experts when you need them? image

Mint Mark appears to be obliterated, so would be hard to tell the actual mint, I would think. Then again, these cobs are not my strongest point.

Positive it's Mexico. Shield looks like Phillip V early 1700s and so does the look. These come very crude and any details along the edges are a bonus. What is the weight.

weight should be 27,5 gram for an 8 reales of this period/ type, it has the Habsburg shield so that rules out Philip V (Bourbon line)
since there are no marks visible , I guess considering the crude shape ,its from Mexico and minted under Carlos the second (1665-1700)
it has the typical shape of cobs minted under assayer Geronimo Bercerra (1668-1677)
    probably a shipwreck coin
    just my 2cents.

I can find nothing exact in my Sedwick 2nd edition of the Book of Cobs, but there are a couple close.
It looks to be early 17th century, maybe 1610-1620, but I can see no mint or other marks. From
the size and the way that it was cut, I'd say a 2 real, since they were literally "pieces of 8" where
the denominations (1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8 reals) each weighed 1/2 of the next denomination. The silver was
crudely shaped into a bread-dough elongated bar and the pieces sliced off, then struck by hand with
a blow from the hammer. Sorry I have nothing more.

You're right Andres. Charles II looks better.

    1. It appears to be a Spanish-flavored cob, all right.

    2. It also appears to be made of silver.

    3. I'll bet it's really old.

There. Glad I could be of assistance. image
