No doubt rare and a real variety IMO, not like some other SHQ varieties, $5k is a little on the high side though and I doubt it will sell although it only takes one person with deep pockets and a want. Maybe I should buy it so I can support coin dealers and make sure he doesn't fold and go under. After all, the $5k or his selection is not his fault, thus making it our responsibility.
Though I do have a dog, he isnt in this particular fight. Meaning, I own one of these DDR coins, just not that slabbed one and I am not affiliated with this sell in any way. I am sympathitic towards the seller on his starting bid I have to admit. Even at 5K, I still feel the coin may even be a bargin, in the grand scheme of things that is. It is that rare. And being something so rare almost nobody may never own it, people will just poo poo the idea the coin is anything to anyone anyway.
This coin will be on the cover, among others, of the new Cherrypickers' Guide due in November. If the seller had known this he might have waited a couple weeks to list.
Wonder how he got the coin? He is in St. Louis, MO area. All the known examples are from southeast Texas.
I say it is a neat variety and who knows, it might be worth that much, I don't know....but that's a lot of dough for a variety. Does anyone know the Mint State POPS at the TPGs?

The auction shows the item location as Illinois.
Does anyone know who the seller is? I seem to recall his ebay name but can't remember who it is.
<< <i>THIS PRICE IS NOT NAGOTIONABLE (sp). HAPPY BIDDING!!! >>
Clearly this price is negotiable - up - or it would not have made it a auction...
Those are some scary long fingers on Duke Ellington - no one he could play the piano so well! That said I can think of several coins with a '7' in the second digit that I would rather spend $5k on...
I've learned over the years that it really does not matter what someone "thinks" a coin is worth even if that number is based upon populations or rarity.
There has to be someone else that "knows" a coin has value and is willing to pay the requested premium.
Didn't one of these sell within the past two years for a couple of grand?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
It is a rare a valuable coin and I don't even do moderns. While 5k might be ahead of its time I cant think of a bigger Washington or any error or DD that isn't on a penny and that is part of the states quarters gives it some up side. That said I am a buyer at $1,500 so I know a few of you are probably a little higher, thats a lot for modern junk.

I see your bid and raise it to 2k That's about my limit and I'm sure many others.

Lol I figured as much but that was my whole point that the 5k wasn't that far off. I would love to see what it would do in an open 10day auction.
The coin for sale was bought raw on eBay back in 2009. Soon after their discovery by cam40. One of three sold on eBay back then. And none have been sold since then as far as I can tell.

ya, i saw that. no takers with that starting bid. but, with the economy the way it is, the timing of the auction may not have been there. but it better times i think, 5k for that coin wouldnt seem so unreasonable.
also, i wonder if it being graded 64, as opposed to a 5 or better, has a role in it not flying off the shelf.

Not a chance tho. IMO
If you track this coin/auction I`m guessing he`ll continue to relist it over and over until he does get a bite.

I also wish he'd do a 10 day no reserve auction. I bet he'd pull near 3k. I'd be a strong bidder but 5k is way to much for it. Neat coin!
"Is this the one that went for I think it was $1200?"
I asked the seller which one of the three he bought and he said he couldn't remember.
The three sold for approx. $750, $1225 and $800.
They sold from San Antonio, Nacogdoches and Nacogdoches.
Waiting to see what being included in and on the new Cherrypickers' Guide does to their value.
