Want to try to guess the TPG grade on this 1808 CBH ? **Grade posted**

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
This one is in an older NGC slab and is a tougher coin to grade if you don't know this series, but there are clues.
First generation CBH design that I picked up from a pretty smart guy.
I think NGC got it right by the way.
What say you on this snowy Sunday in the northeast?

I know this coin and also believe NGC has the grade correct, so I will refrain from posting a grade.

Congrats on the very nice NewP image

I'll bet the seller priced it one grade higher than they graded it.

    Myself I like it as a AU53.

Well, it's in the "wrong" holder, no sticker so there must be a reason for this...... right?
I don't want to guess hi and make it look like I over-graded it, and possibly ruin my online reputation so I say XF-40.

<< <i>Nice and original, with luster and color!
Now what do you mean in an older ngc slab.....which one to be exact? >>

The question is : How much will it cost to get the OP to let go of it ? image
It looks like AU 62, but if you know NGC and PCGS ... they ain't givin' it up. And that means even if they disagree by 2 to 3 grade points on any particular coin, because of adopting standards. But that's my simple mind thinkin' again.
  • joebb21joebb21 Posts: 4,747 ✭✭✭✭✭
    I agree with the au62

    otherwise I say 55

    Sheesh
Well it has no sticker cause it has been in the bank box since before the sticker company ever thought about starting a sticker company and it is in the wrong slab because I don't play that game.

image I knew all that which is why I wrote what I did. Man, I do remember this coin. How many years has it been? I liked the coin and found it at a very small show if I recall correctly. Is that the story I told ya?image You were a very smart man to grab it when you did. And I do still know how to grade these. Heh Heh

  • So, what is the grade.

P.S.--I think that AU is too generous. I'm in the 35/40 crowd.

Man, you did not give us much time to reply on this thread before you spilled the beans on the NGC grade.

My guess would have been NGC 58, cross currently to PCGS as 53. It is an attractive coin, and I do like it.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

The little bit of the coin that is showing in the slab pic completely reaffirms my grade guess for me.....if not better ( AU 62 for sure). The curls are beautifully struck and the luster looks to be gorgeous.
    Choice 1808 for sure !

Judging by field luster I would have said AU58 to MS62. I'd be a buyer at the 58 level but not so sure about MS61-62.
In never considered anything lower than a 58. One can always grade a coin by luster if the strike is throwing you off.

I grade it freakin awesome despite the pedigree.image
  • stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
I agreed with the 58 grade which is why I bought the coin. It is struck soft in some areas, but if I recall the luster supported the grade.
There is only a touch of rub as well. If it was a lower grade there would be more of a wear pattern on Liberty's face and more broken luster IMO.
Of course if the owner doesn't like the coin, I would probably bail him out of the coin what he paid me years ago. image That JRocco is a wise man.

Grade seems fair to me although not my series. Regardless, I think it's got a great look. Congrats and thanks for sharing.image

    Thanks guys for the opinions.
And thank you stman for being there to bail me out of this one if I ever should need bailing out image

When I knew you had purchased this coin in 58 plastic I knew it had to be solid for the grade because
I am sure you looked at it for several hours under multiple different light sources and those "stman only"
geometrically impossible angles using multiple loupes to see if there might be a hairline buried somewhere
    in a recessed area.
In other words, if it got you to pry open your wallet I knew it was solid for the grade.

image I don't remember if it had a hairline or not. Now I'm gonna be up all night wondering if I missed something. I was at a show so I could only look for so long at the coin knocking over the dealers lamp twisting the coin and stretching my neck. It's a beauty and a year where nice color doesn't come along too often. Glad you still have it and I knew you would.

It's simply a gorgeous coin. The strike is a bit mushy (pretty normal for the date) but all of the other atonements are wonderful. Just lovely. Thanks for sharing it.
