1978 Topps Baseball Wax Box Rip

My '76 Football packs were a disaster and there were no big pulls of note from my '79 Football packs. So....I still have the urge to rip something and I did get this added to my BBCE package. I've always wanted to rip a box from the '70's, so....to rip....or not to rip..... image

Pulling for you to nab the elusive Gem Mint Ryan. Love the 78s. May be you pull a nice minty Molitor and Murray.

Love this year. I actually thought about buying one of these boxes and you addicts pulled the trigger on all the boxes before I could even get back to his site. lol.

Packs 1-4. Hit the Ryan, but centering is off.

Packs 5-8 were a little slower with star power, but I did hit the Murray RC! Nice centering, but top right corner keeps it from a high grade.

You hit some major stars in 1st 9 packs. Strange how all the star cards are badly off-center... I believe a PSA 9 of any of those cards are under valued at today's prices; despite what most other "vintage collectors" may say...
    Enjoy your collection!

Those star cards (Ryan, Murray, Brett and Jackson) are notorious for poor centering. If you can land just one of those in a straight PSA 9 grade, you're looking at quite a return.

The well centered cards seem to fall into the same sequence in the middle of the packs. A lot of nice commons to upgrade my raw set with. Hopefully some star cards start to fall into that slot. Here are packs 13 - 16:

Tough centering on those but you are pulling all the star cards at least! If you can land a low pop gem mint 10, that would be great, like a a Jackson Todd..

Gonna quit for the evening and catch the rest of the ball game. I am happy with the star power so far, and I will definitely be making some upgrades to my raw set. This rip has been a blast so far. I'll probably start back up in the morning.

Johnnie LeMaster and Wayne Nordhagen are a couple more commons that are damn near impossible to find centered. Be on the lookout for those too!

Tim - the Morris RC is nice and probably going in on my next sub. I need to go over everything with a loupe first though.

Last four packs. Hit the Molitor RC in the second to last pack. Unfortunately, there is a surface wrinkle to the left of the "P" in Paul. That's it, hope everyone enjoyed the show.

Is the Joel Youngblood a little bit faded in hand? If not, that looks like a potential 10.

The name does looks a bit faded. Otherwise, the card and corners are very sharp.

No gum eating this time. I did try a piece out of a '78 pack before, and my son has tried one from a '75 pack. Not something we'll do again though!

Are you aware of the variations in this set? There are several that are desirable to us '78 set/registry collectors. There are some cards that have different color stitching on the baseball on the front and some other errors/variations. I can post the list of variations if you need it and would like to see if you pulled any.

I need 4 cards to from that set.

Did you get any of these Brewers:

    Larry Hisle
    Steve Brye
    Larry Haney
    Brewers Team

I need them in an 8 or better. If you got them and are not going to sub them yourself. I would be interested in scans and possible purchase.

    Thanks

    Shawn
After those four National League games, Gorman Thomas was never the same, and neither were the Brewers, and come to think of it neither was I.

This is the list I have. I've got a handful of these should you need any for comparison. Also, Bubblebath girl may have all these with as many cards from '78 as they have opened.

Also, I know PSA recognizes some of these variations, as I have slabbed versions of both of the Jose Morales cards that I pulled from packs myself. I don't know if they recognize all the variations or not.

It would be cool if anyone has more variations of these and could chime in or even post scans if they felt the urge.

Thanks to all of those that have posted or pm'ed an interest in purchasing some of these cards. It will likely take me 2-3 weeks to get through all of these and decide what I'm going to sub and what I'm going to keep to upgrade my raw set. I will keep those in mind that have posted cards that they needed and I will get back to you at that time if I am able to help.
