Has anyone ever requested references from a zero feedback seller who is selling a pricey coin on the Bay??? Not planning to do it myself, but how much credibility would you give his response?

well here it is common to provide for or offer or ask for references. i don't ever recall the subject being discussed here as it relates to eBay. i don't see where it would be wrong to contact such a seller and ask for them.

I remember a time not so long ago responses might read "everybody has to start at zero" , i came across a seller with many hammered coins being offered and zero feedback and of course a lack of bidders. I was happy to hoover up the Alexander lll 's and Elizabeth l along with James l and at half the price they should have went for. Everything went faultlessly and the ebayer now has feedback points , moral of the story is dont list high end items starting out i guess.

Much the same happened to me several years ago on eBay.
I bought some very nice certified coins at exceptionally low prices from a seller just starting out.
IIRC I gave him his very first feedback. Now he has a fine eBay reputation with 100% FB and very high DSRs
As his feedback rating went up, his coins fetched higher bids - to the point where I (always looking for bargains) pretty much stopped bidding.
Moral: low feedback doesn't always equal bad seller.
