I have the opportunity to purchase an 1888o hot lips varity morgan. I was wondering what info u guys could give me on this coin. Im trying to get as much info before looking at it. The coin is raw and the owner claims to be in au condition. Are there any other double die impressions on the obverse other than the lips that could help identify it? I dont have pics to post but was hoping maybe someone here might have one and could post one for me to look at. Any info would be great.

If you are deployed in the desert RUN AWAY.

Otherwise, how good are you at grading and counterfeit detection? If you are unsure of yourself, I would look for a certified example.

*run away from the coin, as it's likely fake.

Grading the coin I am somewhat confident but as you said if it would be a counterfeit I may have a problem. i have been trying to locate another one to look at but no success yet. Just wanted to have as much info in my pocket as possible before going to look at it

the 1888-O VAM 4 Doubled Die Obverse is a very scarce coin in AU or better, usually commanding a 4 figure price if it is problem free, and in particullar if it is in a PCGS holder with an assigned grade and attribution. The variety should also have evidence of doubling in the profile of Liberty's nose, and sometimes even as far up as the forehead. If you can weigh the coin and it falls within tolerance for Morgan Dollar specs. it should be genuine. I am not aware of any transfer die forgeries of this variety yet. Look at the page for the variety at Vamworld. com for specifics on other die markers. If you just want an example for the enjoyment of the features, then stick with buying a lesser grade (Fine-Very Fine) in a NGC or PCGS holder. I always have these grades in stock, they are not difficult to obtain.

just because you haven't seee a fake yet doesn't mean one doesn't exist.

they will fake anything, even the holders the things come in.

Also, check out the search feature on this website.

And, if you enable the private message feature of your profile (bottom half of profile page, "allow private messages"), the Morgan variety experts around here will be able to communicate with you person-to-person!

  • You should not buy an uncertified coin unless you feel confident in your ability both to grade the coin and detect if it is counterfeit.
Since you say you are a newbie, I'm assuming you do not have the level of experience that would allow you to make those determinations.
My advice: unless you are going to pay less than $35, do not buy that coin.
