So that's what I get posting something before the forum frenzy of the 25th Ann. sets. Bump for those who missed it...

It's cooler than the 25th anniversary whatever. Like all the die shrapnel damage.

The die polish on the reverse is almost comical, "hmmm, lets shine this one up a bit for a few more strikes, make it look a little less ragged"image Might have been the last die pair left period, and they had to squeeze out the quota-----------------------BigE

I think what you're looking at is actually striations on the un-struck portion of the planchet, not die polish. They came from the rolling of the planchet strips.

That's one amazing coin! It doesn't happen too often to that extent. I think I've seen a quarter(maybe 1998?) that had similar detioration.

I thought so at first also, except the planchets are not rolled so rough and the polish lines extend over the top of the E----------BigE

I would call that a damaged pair of dies. The dies didn't just wear out, erode, crack, cud, and eventually break. A screw or something similar came loose and went through the machine cracking both dies and leaving shrapnel everywhere. Some parts of the dies are still pretty sharp.

I'll stick with my original assessment. Still doesn't look like polish to me.

    Wow, that's messed up. Cool!
  • I don't normally brake for Zincolns but that is a very cool coin. Any coin struck from dies that far gone is rare no matter the era and I would think even more so this late in the game. coin
