National media attention about the dollar coin

If congress passes a bill for the dollar coin to replace the dollar bill, what happens to the collectibility of the presidential dollars? This series has been on life support ever since its inception along with the national park quarters. Even if it did pass in congress we are probably a few years away from inception of the dollar bills being taken out of circulation and the dollar coins hitting the market in groves. I just wonder if there would be a huge influx of collectors wanting presidential dollars when they begin seeing them everyday and thus driving new blood into the industry just like the statehood quarters did. I undoubtedly know the collector base of presidential dollars would increase, but I guess it is a matter of how large it would be.

...tough to say. the gubmint has done a very very poor job of educating the public. most of the masses don't even

realize these small bucks are minted each year. the ones that discover them in their change get nervous that they may

have just received a bus token or monopoly money instead of real legal tender! image

Talking about a poor job educating the public......If I get that email about not accepting the $1 coins because they took "In God We Trust" off of them, I'm going to do something irrational......image

I haven't encountered any cashier that hasn't recognized one of the Presidential or Sackie coins as being worth a dollar - yet.
    Ditto for Ikes and Susies.
I have had clerks that don't realize that $2 bills are legal tender and not particularly rare.
I recall one instance when the teenage clerk called her manager to ask if she could accept the deuce.
On several occasions I've been asked if I really want to spend it (the implication being it is rare, ergo potentially valuable).
Older cashiers will either just accept it or comment that they didn't know these were still in circulation.
The teller at my bank puts them aside for me and I get 20 or 30 every month, which I spend in the local stores, who probably send them right back to the bank image

Personally, I do not think this would affect the coins collectability anymore than what the Eisenhower Dollar currently enjoys. Or quarters from the early 90's.

It will, however, add to the "potential" for collectability.

Those folks that know about this coin have already collected to their hearts content. Those that didn't know about the coin will be able toi pluck some fairly nice examples out of circulation for their Dansco's.

However, the potential for varieties will be greatly increased with the distribution of the current FR stockpiles into open circulation.
