She ain't pretty...but she's mine - 1804 Quarter

While we can all point out the issues this Key Date quarter has, I like to look at the positives...even if this is a hole-filler in my collection!
Fine+ details, some of which are obscured since this coin was run over by something giving it a slightly uneven planchet.
Likely buried in the ground, given the pot-marked obverse, and subsequently re-discovered and shined up real nice
Or at least that's what I imagine the sequence of events were like in order for this coin to get to its current condition
I plan on sticking it in an envelope in an attempt to retone/crustify to a more natural and slightly more eye-appealing look! This process
will take a couple years to accomplish (or so I suspect), but that's fine by me!
...now who has a 1796 they would like to sell to me real cheap

<< <i>I like all 1804's. Looks like quite a bit of meat regardless of the issues. >>
I agree. I like it!

Ouch
But perfectly understandable!!!
Would you rather have a problem free, original skin AG-3 or this coin?

<< <i>My attitude on tough coins and paper (like 2-3 known Texas nationals) is you get what you can when you can and hope to upgrade later if a object shows up that 1) is better than what you have and 2) if you can afford it.

Always tough to balance between details coins and problem-free pieces especially on key-dates.
When expense is your demon, especially on key dates I generally will sacrifice details and problems
until an upgrade comes along. But in general I like my collection to be as problem-free as possible,
although I do have my smatterings of problem-coins, especially the early type - my 1804 Dime is
such an example since it's AG and has a handful of very light ticks on the surface.
I weighed a lot of factors when bidding on this coin, most importantly my max bid as well as how
much I can get out of the coin when trying to sell it down the road - whether to upgrade or just
disband my collection
Like my 1799 cent - it ain't pretty either, but it's mine, it's genuine, it's not corroded, and the price was right.
I'd rather own scudzy but legitimately rare coins like this than a flashy common date Morgan toner
any day. Enjoy it!
I hear that dollar is a SOB to find.
<< <i>Are you planning to work on the entire 1804 year set?

Even the gold should be a challenge to a modest extent, but probably not if you can pick up the Dollar!!!
something to ponder....that coin during the year of 1863. Was it in circulation, was it 'hoarded' as specie, was it in the ground, or in a collection?

I went the other route when picking an 1804, I bought a low grade problem-free one...but seriously I see the upside to going the problem route. Yours has MUCH more detail.
<< <i>Sweet! For anyone who wants to speak negatively of the coin, first they've got to post a pic of theirs!

But I suspect yours will be easier to resell when the time to upgrade comes along.
The way you described it I was looking for an extreme train wreck coin, but it's not all that bad to me for what it is. Nice pickup on a very tough coin. You gotta get 'em when you can get 'em.
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
Didn't know you had that 1804 Quarter in the works !!
Nice looking coin - great detail left - and its considerably
more difficult to locate than the 1796 you're searching for !!
Congrats are in order !!
