Need professional help !!!

Has anyone ever done business with Richard Hokanson Rare Coin
Investments, Inc. The reason I ask is that I am interested in
purchasing an item from them offered on "Collectors Corner".
I am interested in purchasing his 1853 $20 Assay 900 AU 58.
Could someone review the images and give me any feedbacks ?
Has it been cleaned, dipped, etc. It looks okay to me but I
need some professional help !!!

Hmmmm. It is good to ask for advice, but I would not want to buy a coin like this unless I had a certain amount of confidence in my own judgment.
  • Ah! This is a great time to buy a book or 3 and read stuff online!!!! :-) Don't pull the trigger too soon - there are plenty of targets coming. That was general advice - not specific to the coin at hand.

Why would anyone want to buy an expensive item without knowing enough about it to judge the attributes THEMSELVES?

From the pictures, I would say that it's been whizzed! I would only purchase if you just need an example of this issue.

  • Hi,

I was looking at this site that is linked here, this site that sells coins as investment. THIS? is AU58?? Some of these coins, some of the raw ones, look like.....like coins I don't want.

    Best,
    Eric
  • Hi,

Does anyone have a nice AU58 Barber 10C that could please be posted for comparison with the Barber 10C coin linked above?

    Thanks!

    Eric

    Edited for logic.

I would not spend more than a couple hundred bucks on an item unless it was slabbed by a TPG....unless it was something I knew PERFECTLY!

I don't know about whizzed, but something has been done to it. There is a reason this coin is raw.

  • I dunno, but those fields right and left of the eagle do look a bit like fine whizzing with a very soft brush. Agreed, something was done! Same with that linked "AU58" Barber 10C, raw.....hmm.

Not a pro, but it looks like cleaned with toothpaste or baking soda

Unless unique it's best to pass on anything with problems.... Although easy to purchase, it will be troublesome to sell in the future! image

    Werd.

If you have to ask, you shouldn't buy it. That said, it looks harshly cleaned.

Ask the seller, he's qualified to give a professional opinion
