GTG Poll. Circ 1855-S Half

Picked up a pretty nice half, but have been unable to find comparable examples to figure out a good grade.

The first 1855-S Half is mine.
The other images are pulled from heritage in the date/grade range for comparison.

I'm not sure if it has enough meat to hit VF, but I don't think a 15 is out of question. What do you think?

Thanks!

    15 seems reasonable

  • I agree. You did not show a 20. I think if one could see yours the same size as these images and make a judgement, it would be favorable.

  • I just saw the results (I voted after posting) - I see I am not alone with my vote of 20 image Nice coin there.

I said F15+....most of the coins posted look a tad overgraded, with the exception of the VG10 example.
That said though, I'm thinking I'm too tough, and need to re-evaluate my extensive group of seated halves!

This is a problem-free, very good example for the grade!

    I'm torn between F-15+ and VF-20.

    A VERY nice coin!

(Here is my example, with issues: 1855-S Half)

I believe my example is a "technical" VF-30, but it has issues.

My vote: VF20. I've seen some VF20s that had way more wear than your coin does lately. I saw one CC that graded VF30 with only parts of L__RTY showing, and that was the LEAST worn portion of the obverse. The rest of the coin was VG10, IMO. I thought of PMing you to continue showing you just how much seated half grades are all over the board. Seated halves in older holders are much more conservatively graded from what I can tell.

Wow, I don't remember this thread or even commenting in it!

Little did I know that I would see this coin again (up for auction at Heritage) and independently conclude (for a 2nd time) that I really liked it! And that I would win an auction to acquire it!

I believe the "correct" grade should be F-15+ (Or F-15 with a green beanie). So, IMHO, it's still slightly undergraded.

As for eye appeal, I have yet to see a better example below VF-20. Has anyone else?
