NEWP 1793 Half Cent. PCGS F15 CAC

First of all, a HUGE thank you goes out to JA and JP for giving me the chance to purchase this wonderful coin. JA had been raving about how nice the planchet and details were on this coin for the grade. He was able to purchase it, and it ended up in my hands through a mutual dealer friend. The details are very sharp and nice. There is minor planchet granularity on the right obverse. Other than that, there are a few circulation related marks. The color is an even chocolate brown, with no red like showing up in the images.

I looked at about a dozen 1793 half cents over the last year, and none had a clean planchet. Even though they were slabbed, they had porosity. I am glad I was patient and waited for the right example to come along.

Feel free to comment and thanks for looking!

I was recently admiring a new F15 purchase of my own and marveling at the eye appeal of a coin assigned a grade that, sight unseen, most people would not consider. Your coin is proof that some of these F15 coins are very desirable.

Ankur - that is a really nice example - I am not much on grading 93's - what did you EAC grade it?

Truly an exceptional example, Ankur. All the ones I've ever seen have been much darker.

Rays, possibly, but with secure plus, wouldnt PCGS recognize it if I resubmitted? Not that I plan to. Just saying.

My initial impression was VF-20. I wonder if they downgraded it because of the weak rims.

    A great coin!

Very nice. The coin may have already been graded by EAC standards. From my standpoint, it would be difficult for me to see anything less than EAC 12 and 15 would not surprise me. It is a very pleasing half cent. It certainly looks choice.

i would imagine they image ALL the coins they grade and that a computer program would recognize it. but, i have suggested this before and no one seems to agree with me.

all i can say is that the technology exists. i would be surprised if they didn't use it.
  • Very nice! Nice strike, the reverse is very well struck too.
