Post an image of your "first" coin purchase...

... if you still have it. This is mine - an 1833 large cent and it's the coin that "started it all." I purchased it from the coin shop in the mall when I was about 11. It cost me $10 and I had never before seen a large cent. I thought it was really cool. Today it brings a smile to my face and just makes me chuckle.

Let's see your first coin purchase if you still have it!

Man, I didn't even own a camera in 1969 and the coin was long ago stolen by my brother for beer and smokes.

Bought these for a quarter a set when they first came out. At a BrickandMortar in Redwood City,
California. Not sure if they are even worth a quarter today.

Back in the 70's, I had no way to photograph coins and as such, most or those first purchases are unidentifiable.

However, I kept this one which I paid about $30 (?) for:

I also purchased this one in a bag of coins for $50:

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

I fell in love with the NJ cents while in grade school, and bought this one with lawn mowing money (three dollars for our double lot). Probably ...12 or 13 at the time?

Even if I could remember what it was I dont have it any more. I'm thinking it was a indian head cent?????
  • Just happen to have a picture of it in PhotoBucket. Bought in 1968 for $1.25. You can still see part of the price in the lower corner. It's still in the original 2 x 2 insert.

My first coin was one of those dutch eBay auctions for $1 for an IH cent.

  • My Kodak Brownie couldn't even begin to take a picture of my coin in 1960.
Heck I wish I knew where that dang metal box I kept them in was know
but Mom don't know what I did with it either and she's 101 so if I ever
find them I'll post some pics. I know it must have been a 3 cent piece, a
large cent, a twenty cent piece or some kind of quarter. Hey I did find the
two guns I lost a few years back the other day so the coins shouldn't be to
hard that's what like 50 years ago, heck yea I'll walk right up to them. image
  • No pictures ... I think my first was a proof set, in 1977 or thereabouts. My first (and only) from a B&M was a red 1941-S cent. I had never seen a red wheat before and thought it was the coolest thing in the world.
Let's try not to get upset.
  • What a great set of coins and stories to go with them! Thanks for sharing and keep them coming!

I found this in a junk box for 2 bits about 48 years ago. Started me collecting type coins.

  • Even though I live in NZ, my first coin purchase at a local coin shop was an 1857 Flying Eagle cent.

I don't remember what it was and can only wish that I had a picture.

My first "big" coin was an MS Mercury Dime I ordered from New England Rare Coin Galleries when I was about 12. Man, I checked that mailbox two or three times a day until it arrived!

My first colonial was a 1773 Virginia Halfpenny in PCGS MS 64 (I think) that I bought off eBay about 8 years ago. I didn't really know what it was...but the thought of owning such an old coin in such high grade was amazing to me.
  • HoledandCreative- Talk about a well-loved coin! Is that a cent or a half cent? Its hard to tell from the image. I'm tempted to say I think I might be seeing a "2" under that fraction bar, but its tough to make out...

No need for a pic, my first purchase was a 1999 silver proof set from the Mint, then it took off from there.
