The ultimate Frank Thomas question

Look at the stats on any Frank Thomas card...it will show 145 games played in the '95 season.

The following question has been asked of at least two dozen people well versed in recent baseball history. Even with unlimited time to research, there has still not been a satisfactory answer:

How is it possible that Frank Thomas was credited with 145 games played in 1995?

Simple question right? A couple of factual notes:

1. His team, the White Sox, finished the year 68-76 (thats only 144 games)
2. There was a single one game playoff in 1995; but NOT involving Thomas or the White Sox

I don't know the answer, but am still looking for anyone to offer a plausible explanation.

call it an All-Star Game and let Bud make it a dud.

The "tie" game in question was called on account of rain with the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 7th. Since it went beyond 5 innings, it was an "official" game and all stats counted. Since there was no winner of the game, they replayed the game as part of a double header the following day. Thus, the White Sox and Yankees each played one more game than the standings show in 1995.

In 1967 Cesar Tovar of the Minnesota Twins is credited with playing in 164 games, despite the fact that the Twins only played 162 games that year. They had two games end in ties when they were rained out after the 5th inning with the scores of those games tied. Tovar holds the American League record for games played in a season.

    Thanks

Stupid baseball stat. So if a game gets "delayed" by weather and they play the remainder another day they get credit for an extra game. Just stupid.

So, if the NFL has a game called at halftime due to lightning, and they finish the game the next day does the nfl give them credit for two games? NO! It is still the same game. Dear God! Why am I so pissed at this???? image

That's not correct; if a game is delayed and then resumed at that point, they don't count it as two games.

"But that's not what baseball do". They restart the game from the beginning, so the stats for the incomplete game have to go somewhere, as do the stats for the entire makeup game. You can make a strong case that the stats from the suspended game should be discarded, but baseball decided a long time ago not to do that.

It's slightly different than that. They don't play the "remainder" another day and give credit for two games played. Rather, they play a whole new game some other day.

A game is official once 5 innings are completed (or 4 1/2 if the home team is ahead). If the game is called after 5 innings without a winner, then it is a "tie" game, but everything that occurred in the game counts. Since there are no "ties" in baseball, they replay the game from the beginning some other time.

It's a relic from the days before they had lights. Many games were suspended on account of darkness and that was how they handled it. They just applied the same rule to rain-outs. I would guess if they were making the rule now they would probably choose to simply pick up the game where it leaves off and call it one game. In any event, that is how many baseball leagues handle it.

    Thanks

That's nothing. get me started someday on why they have to throw 4 pitches to intentionally walk someone, or why NFL officials eyeball the spot on tackles, etc yet measure to the inch for 1st downs.
