1823 Broken 3 Bust Half

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,629 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was interested in this coin, as I do not own an example of the variety, but closer inspection revealed that it does not match the characteristics of the O-101 die marriage. Notably, the high "8" in the date and the incorrect positioning of star 13 are tip-offs. On the reverse, the last "A" in AMERICA is too close to the arrowhead. Am I correct in stating that this is an ordinary 1823 half that was carefully tooled to look like a premium "Broken 3" variety?

Broken 3 O-101 or not?

Regardless, there are much nicer 1823 broken 3 examples out there. That one looks to have been scrubbed and dipped to death.

It definitely isn't a broken 3 O.101. The right side of the banner doesn't intrude under M, as it should with an O.101.

Looks to me like an O.110 and someone has tooled the 3. Funny...might have been easier to pass it off as an ugly 3 with just as much work since at least it was the same die pair.

You don't want that coin, especially as a Broken 3, which is a very high demand REDBOOK variety.

The Broken 3, and the Patched 3, have the 3 canted sharply to the right, no way to miss this feature.

    Check out this site.

I have actually never owned this variety. Every example I have seen was either misattributed or severely overpriced. This tooled coin is a new one for me, though!

Message I sent seller on eBay messages.
Thought I would inform you that the coin is a tooled coin as the die pairing is not right for the broken 3.
Being discussed on the coin forums as a fake.

    Sellers reply today.
