3 cent nickel

I was bidding on this coin and was willing to pay triple GreySheet but I was blown out of the water.

It seems that allthought it is difficult to sell some silver coins for melt value these days other coins are still strong.

Wow. Price guide is $750, so someone is off-base. I like the coin and it looks original to me. I also know the seller and he is reputable. Still, that's a lot of money.

That's the price range 1885 business strike 3c nickels are going for these days. In fact, $2,125 for a PCGS VF-35 might just be a tad low, probably because of the spot on the reverse.

And if you plan to buy a mint state 1885 3c nickel, you will find out that it goes for much more than the VF-35 went for.

What are the MS coins going for?

The 1885 is expensive in MS 64-65 but offered periodically. Finding one in circulated grades has been harder (at least for me) which might explain why its price is so high when offered. I have been looking for an AU for over 4 years. In 10 years only three AUs on Heritage.

Wow that is high- I have one somewhere that I bought many years ago-They were rare even then, but not as nearly sought after and were a lot less money. 3 bidders at the 2k level.

i used to comb the internet constantly for an '85 back when i collected that series, never saw a single one for sale. that hammer price doesn't surprise me at all.. nice coin. only 1000 made, and who knows how many have been lost/destroyed since.
