25th Anniv. Set Grading???

BAJJERFANBAJJERFAN Posts: 31,097 ✭✭✭✭✭
Will a single/multiple set/s need to be in a mint sealed shipping box in order for all coins to qualify for the 25 Anniv label? If you buy a set, open it and find defective coins that can be replaced previously issued coins would there be a problem with that?

If you open the package from the mint, 3 of the 5 coins loose the "25th anniversary" designation immediately.

You must repack the US Mint box in another box and ship to PCGS and request ,if desired, all of the OGP to be sent back to you with the coins

The way I understand it is that 3 of the 5 will not get graded as first strike anyway so why even send them all in at once. Just pick out what you

want graded and send them in. It will sure be cheaper.

To get the 25th Anniversary label on all of them, OP is not asking about FS.

Apart from the 25th Ann. label. Unless someone really wants to spend a huge amount on grading fees, wouldn't the most pragmatic approach be to open the set look at the RPs and Ss then send in only those RPs and Ss that look good. Of course I don't get grading most moderns anyway, so take that for what it's worth.
  • I've been searching but not finding. Looked for the submission numbers on PCGS and am confused. Only the S UNC and Reverse Proof will qualify for First Strike?

What are the correct submission numbers?

505253 2011 $1 Eagle-25th Anniversary First Strike MS First Strike for the bullion?

509189 2011-S $1 Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary Set MS No First Strike for the S?

    Couldn't find a 25th Ann. number for the W?

509191 2011-W $1 Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary Set PRDC The regular Proof

509192 2011-P $1 Silver Eagle Reverse PR 25th Anniversary Set PR The reverse Proof but no First Strike?

Man I need to do this stuff more lol.

I assume PCGS will post submission advice for these sets here and/or on their website in plenty of time for everyone to get their forms filled out before the coins ship from the mint.
  • The grading codes are confusing enough.

From PCGS, for UNC ASE only:
    505220 2011 $1 Eagle-25th Anniversary MS
    505253 2011 $1 Eagle-25th Anniversary First Strike MS
    505254 2011-W $1 Silver Eagle MS
    509185 2011 $1 Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary Set MS
505255 2011-W $1 Silver Eagle First Strike MS
    508069 2011-(S) $1 Silver Eagle MS
    509189 2011-S $1 Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary Set MS
508070 2011-(S) $1 Silver Eagle First Strike MS
508072 2011-(W) $1 Silver Eagle First Strike MS

There is a code 505253 for Bullion ASE with 25th and First Strike. This is strange. Most people in this forum thinks besides the UNC-S and RP-P, there should be no
First Strike for the other three coins.

I hope PCGS staff can clarify this.

  • It just occcured to me that the US Mint did say that the coins would not be shipped until late November however First Strike usually starts for coins that are post marked within the 1st 30days of release which means some coins may or may not make the cutoff since shipping of the coins will start in late November, obviously very close to the end of the 30days

PCGS usually count 30days from the 1st day of shipping, so I don't think you need to worry about it.

Yeah and how does PCGS know when the 1st day of shipping starts. Unless of course they get this info directly from the mint there is no way to find out the exact date of when they begin shipping.

I dont know why you would think that PCGS would depart from what they did with the 20th Anniv labeling with FS. I know at least 1 maybe 2 gold were beyond first strike dates individually, but in the sealed set with anniversary labelling it was offered again. Ditto for the 06 silver set.

    Expect the same again.
  • That bullion FS number was for the coin issued earlier this year (Deadline for submission was 2/04/11)

    2011 FS

I believe FS for this set will only be for the S and RP as these are the only two that are newly issued. NGC is not offering ER on ANY of the coins

Wouldn't it be nice if people just enjoyed these coins in the nice wood boxes they come in, and worried
about sending in for grading coins where there is actually some significance to what the grade is?

  • In 2006 PCGS offered first strike for all of the coins in the set because just like this year, all of the coins in the set were minted specifically for use in the set. What will be different this time, and why I think that they should either label all submissions as first strikes or not offer it at all is that these sets will sell out in a matter of a few days at the most and will all be shipped over the course of a week or two in November, making every single set that will be shipped by the mint eligible for first strike labels. Looking at the website, it looks like you can still get first strike labels for 2006 sets if they are still sealed and postmarked before October 31, 2006. Every single 2011 25th anniversary coin will be a first strike coin (all have already been struck) and only people who can't figure that out will pay major premiums for a coin so labeled. Since PCGS charges for the First Strike label I would expect them to simply offer it to all sets once they figure out that any sealed set will meet the postmark cutoff date. The first set will ship long after sales are concluded and the coins have all been struck before sales begin so the whole notion of first strike is pretty much without meaning for this set.
