I can't watch 'pink' sports anymore......

DoubleEagle59DoubleEagle59 Posts: 8,315 ✭✭✭✭✭
First of all, I don't want anyone to think I'm against fundraising for charities in anyway whatsoever.

My wife and I donate regularly to numerous charities.

Also, at first, I liked the pink accents to sports teams jerseys.

But I must say, the 'neon' pink is just too strong and I have to admit, I don't enjoy the watching these colors on television anymore.

Anyone else feel the same way?

I also am not against causes and fundraising, but agree with you. Just a reflection of the liberal society we live in. Anything (on the same level) done for prostate cancer? After all, don't men die sooner than women (generally speaking)?

I've just grown tired of the inbalance in attention. And God forbid, you are one the of the few guys who ends up with breast cancer.

You know I feel the same way too. While it was certainly well-intentioned at first (I mean who would be against raising breast cancer awareness?), it now seems that what was once a serious horrific disease you wouldn't wish upon your worst enemy (yes believe it or not men get breast cancer--just ask the late Rod Roddy) has now become nothing more than some trendy fad. And what happens to the quest to find a cure for breast cancer when "think pink" is no longer in vogue and it's now all about say, diabetes awareness or something?

Think this sounds ridiculous? Well remember in the 90s when all the celebrities wore red HIV/AIDS awareness ribbons? Now there's hardly one little peep about HIV/AIDS (and correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure there's still no cure). And when in the late 80s/early 90s or so it was all about spotted owls and saving the rainforest? Now it's all about breast cancer awareness and climate change. I guess even the media is not immune to passing fads.

What I wish is that we paid half as much attention to pushing the cancer industry - yes there is such a thing - towards actually curing the disease as we do getting wrapped up in slick marketing campaigns that take our money & attention every year but only advance the ball forward slowly, if at all.

In other words, spare me the ribbons. Show me a cure. Like, in 5 years for instance.

Although I can agree with all posters so far, I want to stress that my intention with my post was not to comment (good or bad) about cancer fundraising.

My only intention for this post is the VISUAL aspect ONLY, not the reasons why they're wearing it.

All this pink is so distracting that I find it difficult to watch these sports telecasts anymore.

Maybe, as one wise poster said "use a black and white TV".

It does not bother me, especially for the cause. I am usually watching the plays and half the times I don't even pay attention to the announcers.

One of my son's best friends lost his mother recently to cancer and he wears a pink arm sleeve for his football games. Some of the boys who my son plays basketball with are wearing pink socks for their fall league games also. This will not be allowed when their high school season starts unless Aidias who is assosciated with their high school team has pink socks in their inventory, which I don't believe they do. I agree with the dedications towards lost one's as long as those wearing the pink truly believe in the issue and are not just doing it because everyone else is.......maybe the professional sports can do it similar to the way they do moments of silence at games ....... dedicate the game or even one game a year for a specific cause and leave it at that...... just my opinion so don't jump the messenger on this one......

Just another comment I forgot to include.....I thought my point of having a game a year or maybe a week dedicated to a cause in the professional ranks would work, which is the way I thought it used to be....when it was cancer awareness week the sports dedicated the week's events toward the cause. Now as has been mentioned it seems the whole season is dedicated to the cause........this can probably be discussed forever since it is another hot button issue that everyone cares about to a degree.....

My mom had breast cancer and she survived. I give to Susan G. Komen now, but I am not sure why. I do not know what they do for breast cancer other than market pink this and pink that. I don't think my mom got any help from them... why should I give to them. I may as well cut a check to my mom to help the cause.

Anything can become an "industry", into which huge amounts of money is poured; in which thousands of people make their living [sometimes a very good living]; and which once established is promoted, and protected.

The "breast cancer" cancer industry has, for many years, been on the rise as far as publicity, marketing and constant public awareness. The persons involved in running and promoting this particular industry have two things going for them that few other similar industries have, namely a direct link to 1. Women; and 2. Bre_sts. For whatever reason these two things generate much more attention and response that other things (for example uterine cancer involves one of the two things, but not both, though uterine cancer is very bad also).

In the end, somethings, for whatever reason, seem to be viewed as more important, more significant and more worthy of attention and money than others.

I was watching some NFL games yesterday and was amazed at the substantial increase in the number of things on and off the filed that were blazing neon pink [towels, headbands, wristbands, helmet stickers, mouthguards, sideline items, etc.]. Quite annoying actually.

how long will we see pink?

i agree it's visually annoying. i even dislike the lighted hockey boards.
  • great subject, there was an article in my local paper a few years back asking if there was an overload of breast cancer awareness, and if it would hurt the cause, i agreed. i am not saying i want people to die of breast cancer or that i do not care about it, because i do...but that being said omg enough already there are things that kill far more people (or impact people lives forever) than breat cancer, so when i have money i choose to give it to other charities that affect more people and get way less attention.

    Yes. It's loud and distracting.

Many of the players who do not wear pink make a small donation on their own volition to breast cancer research.

South Park episode about this issue

This episode of South Park sort of deals with this issue, about how people don't want to do AIDS Awareness anymore because it was a "90s thing" and that it's all about cancer awareness now. But in this case they didn't mention specifically breast cancer, just cancer in general.

Your instincts are actually pretty accurate. Very little of the money given to the Susan Komen foundation actually is used for research. I would suggest searching for charities that use less than 10% of their funds received for overhead and salaries. I believe the latest stats are that the Susan Komen foundation uses about %15 of the money for actual research.

A reflection of our "liberal society?" Yikes. Go back into your bunker and watch football with your guy friends.

Maybe the breast cancer organizations just do a better job marketing themselves?

Maybe women are better than men at fundraising, social media, etc...?

    I could go on.

  • I personally think breast cancer awareness month is dumb. How many people on this planet are not aware of breast cancer? If you are going to have a month, make it a breast cancer research month. BTW, how about a testicular cancer month? The players could all wear blue with blue bats and blue shoes and blue balls image

I would think there are many more people who must deal with diabetes (such as my wife) and I would think if nothing else it most definitely needs an awareness month...but I don't know if it even has so much as a ribbon. image
