Ive been looking into the PL and DMPL scene for morgans recently

Any advice or conversation is appreciated

Thanks

    Define rare.....

Some dates have very few in the pop but I see them for sale. Some look plentiful in the pop but I can't find them. Some years have DMPLS that are just ugly.

Basically the mid 90's are scarce. 1900-1904 are scarce for met dates, unattractive the other dates. There are exceptions for every year.

As TN mentioned above, 83-85 S mints are hard.

There is little consistency in DMPL's and years. When one mint made them another didn't, then it moved around as to who seemed to make more. Then none made much of any for a couple years. New Orleans has the weak strike reputation but there seem to be the most from that mint.

Carson City by far has the most in terms of DMPL as a part of total mintage.

  • I always liked P mint and 1921's. Nice P mint DMPL's look lovely. CC's are beautiful too. I was never crazy about S's!!!

This had been my passion before I moved on to other coins. Check out the pl registry and you'll get a good idea. The better dates are generally the more difficult to find in pl or dmpl. If you have a population report, check that out also. Some coins are extremely low.
    I brake for ear bars.
  • Your correct Todd, should have been more specific. Let me rephrase
What years are common in ms but rare in pl/dmpl?

I was at my local shop, and he had close to 200 MS common date morgans for sale.
I picked through them walked away with 9 pl/dmpl including a 21. And 21d but most of the morgans were 1921
So i became curious to see if their are other conditional (pl/dmpl) rarities out there.

  • POP reports can only tell you so much. I collect PL's and I have a very hard time finding 1901-O, 1902-O, 1903. these are all very common in business strikes. I dont collect by mintmark, just by dates. Not rich enough. image

I see the 02-O's out there but not the 01-'s or 03. Don Rinkor has a 01-o in PL right now.

I have always wanted to see the one and only 1893-S DMPL that PCGS has graded. This one would be the rarest DMPL Morgan on the planet.

    1893- very rare

    1904

1901- but any unc is rare

early Philly dates 1879-1882 are tough

Rarest commom date in DMPL,by far 82-S,though i just bought a killer toned PL one.image

1891 Philly is rather common in Mint state up to MS-64, but quite rare in DMPL in all Mint State grades.
    Same thing with 1878 8TF.

  • One last question.
If i were to dip a pl or dmpl would it cause hairlines to be left on the coin?

A "dip" will not cause hairlines but will strip away some luster. It's very easy to kill a nice looking PL coin with dip.
Use caution... I don't mess around with it although I have a few morgans that could probably use a dip & rinse.
  • Makes sense
My issue is I have a DMPL all frosted mirrors etc. however on her left field she has a bunch of hairlines only in that area. However it doesnt effect the reflectivity of her mirrors.
So I was hoping to figure out whats going on with her.

Probably a light wipe in a specific area.
  • Would hairlines hold her back from grading or are they market acceptable on pl and dmpl??

Is it graded. My guess if it is graded it may be die polish. If it is raw it will hold it back from grading.

  • Shame its a nice 21-d
I want to say their hairlines IMO, however they dont effect the reflectivity of the mirrors.

If it is a 21-D I would not worry about it grading PL in the first place. That is a very tough date to get to grade PL.

  • I agree but this coin in hand will blow away other 21-d's
