Question about buying graded unopened packs

I just bought a 1972 Topps football pack graded PSA 8, with a Staubach rookie showing on the back. I had no clue regarding a fair price, so I figured that paying somewhere in the VCP average range of what a PSA 8 Staubach rookie goes for would be a fairly conservative price. Does that sound like a good approach in valuating packs with stars showing, or should it be higher or lower? Curious to see what you guys have to say on the subject.

  • I would say no. The pack graded an 8, not the cards. The Staubach might only grade a 6 or 7.

I don't collect packs, but that is my opinion.

Unopened packs have their own value based on a number of factors, including scarcity, condition of the pack, series and what star card is showing if any. I don't collect football but if a star card is showing through the back of the pack, the value of the pack can be anywhere from 2-4 times the value of a pack from that year with no star showing

What's the difference between a pack that's an 8 vs. a 9? Is the wrapper in better shape, or are there other differences?

when I 1st stared collecting unopened in the mid '80s old timers used to tell me the value of a pack with a star on top was 2-3x the value of the pack. If something was rare, you could almost double that.

Not very scientific, but used that as a rule of thumb and it worked well for me over the years
