I think that tailgating is ridiculous (DO NOT TAKE THE WHOLE THING SERIOUSLY)

Why would any intelligent entity enable fans to come to a ballgame hours before the gates open and enable them to consume alcoholic beverages? It's a recipe for disaster, and it makes people who are generally OK into inebriated boobs, and it turns a-holes into a serious threat to themselves as well as others.

The gates for sporting events should open as late as possible so everything runs smoothly. To me, the idea of being in a parking lot eating food and sitting on a lawn chair is about as trashy as it gets. Just go the ballpark, take your seat, behave like a civilized human being, watch the game, keep the booze cut-off where it is, and go home.

And don't give me this we are trying to save money on food so we do not have to buy a $10 hot dog in the stadium. There's this thing called a sandwich shop in your town. Go there, and pick up some cheaper sandwiches and eat them in the car while en route.

Lastly, I think the state police should make every driver blow into a breathalyzer prior to leaving the parking lot. Do you know how many people would get pulled over and/or how many people would choose not to drink if they knew it was coming? You have an assembly-line setup!

Have a nice day. I thought we all could use a good laugh as the weekend starts.

Guess you have never been to Lambeau Field. They have it down to an art. With the screening measures at Lambeau it takes a good 45 minutes to into the stadium so you need to be there early as it is. For me, we have had the same tailgating group for over 30 years.

But many people are not like our group. They are the tailgaters that go to one or two games a year and light it up.

I personally love to tailgate at any sporting event. Badgers, Brewers and Packers for in state events and we try to see what other teams do when we travel. Some people go all out.

Most of it is tongue and cheek. Just because I do not like to do something does not mean other people can't.

The part of this that is serious is the booze. 10 years as a professional poker player, I had seen enough drunks in my life. Of course, that's how I paid my mortgage!

i suppose it depends on the venue.

it's a ritual for many who have parked in the same spot and have made friends who park in the same area. for the most part it's really under control.

the tailgating at Stanford (football) can be over the top, not so much drinking but the extravegance. their marching band is.image though

i think at Raider games and 49er games now tailgaters must have a ticket to the game, which should help.

the amatuer hour crowd and the obnoxious drunks do bother me, they are not really there for the game just to get lit up.

I used to go with my friends who had a Friday night season ticket plan at Yankee Stadium.

I had to drive home because they got plastered all the time and I do not drink except on rare occasion (medication-related).

At least 90% of the people who are there in the lot get increasingly rowdy as the time passes. It's very unbecoming to see people make complete asses out of themselves with zero self dignity. I try to ignore and placate them, but let's just say that it does not go well for them when they invade my air space!

You hate tailgating, the rest of us hate elitists who use math to interpret everything. I guess we're even.

Okay that was a little harsh but tailgating is a fact of football. People have done it for decades and people will continue tailgate for decades to come. With hanging out comes drinking and drinking is a part of being a spectator of professional sports.

You should give yourself a pat on the back. Being a designated driver is a noble service.

On the flip side you should consider the viewpoint from the opposing view. If 90% are drinking then a non-drinking wet blanket party pooper type is the abnormality.

You are miscontruing my drinking comment:

    1) Part of the problem with tailgating is the amount of time they let people tailgate because alcohol is involved. It does not take a rocket scientist or a mathematician to observe that even normal people are going to get inebriated the more time you give them access to the lot. Even if you cut off one hour, you are decreasing the alcohol intake of an individual quite a bit.

    2) It's not the tailgating which I abhor (although it is not for me), it's the alcohol-related behavior that ensues. Unwinding with ONE drink is OK. "Loosening up" and acting like a blithering idiot is another.

I just went to the Cowboys/Pats game and tailgated for about 4 hours before game time. It was a great time, watched the 1:00 game on a TV, drank, ate like it was going to be my last meal and saw a good game. There were a ton of Cowboy fans in New England.....the Boys travel really well. I did not see anyone get into trouble or any fights break out. The Mass. State Police were out in force and I did not notice anything bad happen. I see where you are coming from with the alcohol, I just don't have a problem with it. I guess people are going to drink at the stadium, bar or at someone's party/house.

Real tailgating isn't done in a parking lot. Its done on beautiful college campuses (mostly in the south).

I was a season ticket holder for ten years for the Browns and there was nothing worse then going to a game and walking thru the picket line of Ravens or Steelers fans who had been camped out either overnight in the parking lots or from the break of light early gameday morning........having a good time and tailgating is one thing, but getting lit up so you can verbally abuse and try to start confrontations with fans who don't tailgate and are walking to a game is another.......and I saw this personally for ten straight years

    al.

PS......and to be honest when games start Ravens and Steelers fans were not the worse during the actual games IN THE STADIUM....that award goes to Eagles and Bengals fans who seemed to be thrown out with great regularity, at least during my ten years of being a ticket holder.....of course for many of the games Steeler and Raven fans seemed to outnumber Browns fans.....or at least at the end of games....
