A truly undervalued CBH- 1821

Most of us who collect this series have lots of choices for the dates we need between 1821 and 1836, either in lower grades, or in MS all the way to gems. They come along often enough in sales, or on websites, that if we are relatively patient, we can find the one that fits our needs.
However, the 1821 is a lot tougher than most would think. And the prices should be higher than any guides would indicate.
In 10 years, I have owned a 63( PCGS) and an NGC 65( sold when it didn't cross). Auction records show only 1 PC 65 has sold, and no 66's( though 3 have been graded(?). And I have been looking for 10 years.
A recent sale showed a PC 63 brought over 5300-- several thousand over a generic 63. The one 65 might bring close to 16,000, if nice.
Similar findings for the 1823 in 65 and 66. Though 3 65's have been graded, only one shows up in auction records. The single 66 is really in strong hands.

My first MS CBH was actually my 1821 PC63.
As for that 1823 in PC66 you mentioned, I wonder what I would have to do to pry those hands open
She sure is quite pretty though, don't you think Dale
Absolutely agree--1821 is an extremely tough year. At least in 64, the pops show fewer in 1821 than 1808, 1811-1814, and 1818-1820 (varieties combined).
The pricing guides recently reflected a change of '23s from "generic" status-- a welcome adjustment.

I wish it was mine hchcoin. It happens to be the lone 1823 CBH MS66 Dale was referring to in his post and belongs to him.
I would love to buy that one from him someday......(pssst, Dale, are you reading this thread?)
However, I happen to be very fond of my prooflike 1823 below (Ex. Reed Hawn, David Queller)........
PCGS Registries
Box of 20
SeaEagleCoins: 11/14/54-4/5/12. Miss you Larry!
That is one sweet 1823! That should bring 2x-3x of list.
I'll have to settle for third place with my 1823...but I like her anyways...
P.s--I don't think Dale is selling the 66, unless you can find a 67 to swap it for

Agree that 1820's are also extremely tough; however, the list prices of the 1820's reflect the rarity better than the list prices of '21s.
I am also quite fond of my 1820 O-103a MS63 (Ex. McClerg, Queller) below and consider it to be one of my favorite CBH's in my Registry set.
My set is just AU. Here are the the 1820 (AU58), '21 (AU55) and '23 (AU58).
Lance.
lkeigwin--very meaty coins, love the strikes on the '21 and (particularly) on the '23.
Back to the topic of '21s--here's mine--
A bit of a Faustian bargain this one. Not the color that I usually prefer, but finding a decent one in the grade that I wanted was too much to pass up.
Check out Dale's '21 in 63--I doubt that there are many 63s that get any better.

Great looking 1821 Scoobydeux. I've always wondered who owned that one.
Here is my 1821 in 63. Although I can honestly say it looks a bit nicer in hand as compared to the true view, I agree with Scoobydeux that they don't come much nicer than Dale's 1821 posted above.
