US Mint Returns

Found out something interesting today. When you return a purchase to the US Mint for quality problems and request they send you a replacement they:
1. Upon issue of your replacement order they immediately re-charge your CC the full amount at the original cost (plus new shipping fee).
2. Issue a refund for the original purchase (which will take 7-10 days to appear on your credit card).

This back-assward process by the US Mint could easily cause credit card limit problems for those returning major purchases as both charges will appear on your CC account until one of them is eventually refunded. Just a heads up for all.

Additionally:
3. US Mint does not refund what they charged you for shipping and they will charge you shipping again for your replacement order.
4. If your return is a quality issue you can mail or fax them copies of your return shipping costs for credit to your credit card. Be sure to include order number with your request.

been like that for a while.

lately I've been hearing more stories of slow refunds, as well.

Once an item has been marked in the order as returned, it is helpful to follow-up during business hours a few days later to make sure they are timely with the refund processing.

and I concur, sometimes they do refund shipping. If something is totally hosed, you may consider asking for it. the extremely, extremely rare cases of their sending the wrong item may also get you a shipping refund.

I returned two really bad looking AGE shipments, 9,700 on one credit card and 7,600 on another. Double charges on both cards put them both over the limit which didn't, but could have, affected the mint's ability to successfully hit them the second time. Yes, its definitely a problem for some folks but the alternative is waiting until the initial order is refunded and then sending out the replacement order.

The way they currently handle it is by treating as if it were two separate orders and folks really should be aware of this to avoid cc problems.

I don't particularly care for the process but I guess there's not much that can really be done about it.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Replacements were $450 cheaper than a completely new order (weekly gold price grid).

  • Yep. Then when your replacements are delivered to the wrong zip code, you have to PRINT a form, fill it out, then mail or fax it to them so that they may take 4-6 weeks to investigate.
