2009 mint proof set lincolns big pics inside

Not sure how many of you bought this set, I purchased 4 sets direct
from the mint when released. About a year ago I gave a set to samual
(notlogical) and he wrote me back that the lincolns had a steel blue color
to them, so I broke out the other 3 and low and behold they were the same.
Wierdest coloring ive ever seen on a proof lincoln.

I am going to attempt to get pics now, but did anyone else get sets like this?

    Pretty cool.

Here is my 1983 that has that same type of whiteish/bluish toning at the to and bottom of lincoln.

    I appreciate your reply erickso

Not sure about yours but I bet yours also shows color moreso
in hand than the pics give justice.

almost want to say it might have been a heat problem that caused
it, but I really like the blue.

It's interesting to me because I just saw a Lincoln Chronicles set at a local coin show and the cents in the set were toned quite similar to these.

might it be that the holders really don`t snap together tight enough
to keep out the outside air and the toning source might be the
cardboard box they sit in? and temperature. i mean, theres no
cardboard inside the holders so, maybe its the ink printing or
whatever coating is on the backing material that holds the coins.

Cam I do not think anything case wise from the mint snaps tight
lol-but as for the cardboard I agree that to be a main culprit.

When the state quarters came out the silver ones reacted
bigtime to the heavy red dye used for packaging.

Im just suprised seeing it happen on copper-although if you look
at the pics the color seems to match the packaging.

the tone on the cents is heavier than shown, was very hard to capture.

All of the Lincolns in my clad PROOF sets from 2009 are toning, strongly toning. None of the Lincolns in my 2009 silver PROOF sets show the same toning pattern.

Something the mint figured out between the release of the clad and silver sets happened to the Lincs.

BTW, I have 4 of each types (clad and silver). I notice no toning on the unc mint sets, so it's something in the paper or plastic that the clad PROOF sets are housed in.
  • My sets are doing the same thing. I thought about getting them graded due to the toning but now it looks like brilliant non toned will be hard to come by.
I also thought, what if they come back AT'd. I had a friend ask me if I had done something to them. So would they grade even though they are not supposed to do that so quickly?
    Regards,

with all the reports of them toning, I think anyone seeing a wildly toned one would have to at least consider that it is NT.

If I were going to send them out I would let the powers that be remove them from the mint set, although Ive sent SBA's in still in the cello and had em come back "enviromental damage"

  • my set has the same exact color. the blue is light and very transparent and while i have not tried, very hard to photograph.

the insert holding the coins must be the culprit as these started toning in only a few months. i will shoot pics tomorrow and post. image

shot these quick outdoors with sunlight. guess i should of wiped the dust off the holder.

None of the 4 Silver sets I have are toning, I'll see if I can get a pic.

Here is a side by side comparison, the silver set Lincs are on top, the clad set Lincs are on the bottom. Notice the slight difference in the colour of the package material

Here is a close up of the Silver set Lincs:

What I don't understand is someone posted here that their Silver set Lincs ARE toning, I'm wondering if something may have happened part way through the mfg process?!?!

There have been other instances where certain coins in government issues sets have toned or otherwise changed. 1970-S proof cents are notorious for extreme toning; I've probably seen more toned '70-S cents than UNDIPPED brilliant coins.

The 1974-S silver proof Ike dollar is are another coin that is commonly found with cloudy surfaces. If you find one that's brilliant, chances are good that it's been dipped, or removed from it's original case shortly after 1974.

No offense but this is old news. Those cents started turning the day they arrived and are still turning in my capital plastic board and PCGS slabs. The cardboard is probably recycled with a lot of sulfur in it.

Just looking at a `09 Silver Proof set I have I can report no
toning on any of the coins. Even though there is plenty of cardboard
and canvas bag of halves in my `temporary` box, the environment is right for toning of mine
but it just hasnt happened yet.

I did open an `09 bag of P & D Halves and found nearly all of the P mint coins were toning
with far less of the D mint toning.
I plucked the blast white ones and wrapped those in aluminum foil and threw in all back in the bag.

No offense, but what accounts for the lack of toning on the Silver PROOF set Lincolns?

oh and whomever mentioned the 74 silver IKES, that cloudy haze and rainbow colors those exhibit make them one of my favorites.
