Set Registry dilemna - opinions wanted PICS ADDED!!! Tell me what ya think!

Hello all. I recently purchased a high grade card for my Set Registry and wanted to post a question....If you buy a card, let's say, a PSA 7, and your current PSA 5 looks better than the '7', do you....

#1) Sell the 7 and try for a better one?

#2) Sell the 5 since the 7 improves your standing in the registry? (even though the 5 is a nicer looking card)

  • Bobby, it just depends on which you care about more.

If you want the best Set, there is only one to keep.

If you want the nicest looking set possible, then you can keep the other.

It just depends on your personal collection ambitions.

    Good luck on your decision.

I would keep both so you have the higher rated set and you don't sell a card that you feel is better then the one you are keeping.

Keep them both for now, crack them both and sub them together. If the 5 is the better looking then it should grade better when compared to the other one. Who knows, maybe 8 & 6 on a re-sub?

I will post a scan of the '5' tonight. Haven't received the '7' yet. I could use the sellers scan, but I would prefer to use my own so the scans would be comparable.

  • Plan on selling both and picking up a 7 that looks better than the 5.

Wait until you at least have the 7 in hand to get too excited. It might look just fine once it arrives. If you have a 5 that looks better than a 7 check closely for surface problems. If the 5 still looks that good, send it in for a review or crack and resubmit.

    Good luck!

1933 Goudey Sport Kings. So, no, I would say the 7's don't come around too often (not at a good price anyway)......

There are two pictures available on the registry. Why not keep both and post pictures of both cards? That way, you get the benefit of the 7 and you also can show off your 5 which you believe to be a better card. I certainly would appreciate seeing both if I was looking at your set.

I am toying with the idea of keeping both, however, I usally offset the purchase price of the higher grade card by selling the lower grade castoff. As much as I love these things, I can't afford to keep EVERYTHING.....

Sell the fugly 7 and resub the 5 - no way it comes back any lower than it's curent 5 grade.
  • brendanb438brendanb438 Posts: 1,595 ✭✭✭
Why in the heck is that 5 a 5? Some hairline creases, or is it just a WTF grade and a resub is in order.

Also I am curious on why keep the 7 and if it is that crappy why not get a refund or do you think you can flip the flip for an easy profit if they ignore that fugly card?
  • MBMiller25MBMiller25 Posts: 6,057 ✭✭
Geesh, that 5 has far superior eye appeal to that 7.
  • keep the 7 and sell the 5...its all about the flip....not the cardboard...

I collect cards, but I am also on the PSA Set Registry which, unfortunately, the goal is the obtain the highest numbers possible.
  • Bobby,

First off, Cards of that Era are not deducted for Coloring/Tinting of the paper. I have Cards that are 8's and 9's from the 1930's that are almost brown from age tinting, so this automatically makes the viewer's mind find the EX 5 as more desireable. Secondly unless this is a blatant Mis-Grade, I would think there is something in that EX 5, or better said, on the 5, or a flaw, or??? that made it a 5. If you can find nothing, then I would re-sub it, but the scan here is not detailed enough for most of us to draw an airtight conclusion.

This is the ONE thing that sucks about PSA's grading standards IMO. A virtually invisible surface issue can knock an otherwise-stellar card down to a 5, while lesser cards from an eye appeal standpoint can get a higher grade due to a sloid surface. BVG got that part right - ding the surface component a bit but don't auto-drop the card to a 5.

No...card looks good.......slight ding on upper left corner, but the enlarged scan makes it look worse than it actually is.....

Corners are 7'ish, except the bad one. How does the wet sheet transfer on the reverse effect the grade? can't beleive noabody has mentioned that.

BTW - the 5 is nicer.
  • bobbyw8469bobbyw8469 Posts: 7,139 ✭✭✭
It's not that bad Bob. I am not sure it's a wet sheet transfer but instead, bleed thru, from the front of the card to the back of the card. Sport Kings are notorious for the bleed thru. They are so bad, that is almost a way to tell the reprints from the originals (the reprints don't have the bleed-thru). The graders don't discount for it at all.
  • BobSBobS Posts: 1,738 ✭✭
Bob - my bad. I meant that. Bleed thru. Watching the pearl jam 20 special, kid and wife sleeping, pumpkin beer in season. you get it.

Really - there are 7's and up with the bleed thru? 33's aint my bag (yet)
  • bobbyw8469bobbyw8469 Posts: 7,139 ✭✭✭
It is more common to see it than not, although I have seen some with no bleed thru. Just the vintage way of making cards back in the 1930s. I like the set alot! They are really nice and colorful!

With all the psa labels I've collected throughout the years of cracking and re-subbing, I have the number one mike bossy master set, and can keep the entire collection in one penny-sleeve.
  • Morning,

Although rather Harsh, I think that it is the corners putting that in an EX 5 holder THAT TIME !, especially the upper left and lower right. Great card, I would crack and re-sub, don't know the value, but I can see that in a 6 holder any day.
