When grading varities

I was curious....

How much does the strength of say, a clash, have in determining the overall grade?
Will an earlier die state get a bump in grade?

What does the grader use as reference if a low pop variety?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I am thinking that a clash or other variety is NOT going to increase the grade. In fact, the grader, is not going to see a variety unless its very obvious. I believe any coin sent in for variety gets graded first, then sent for a variety attribution to who ever that expert might be. So its not suppose to be part of any grading process so to speak and any major flaw/variety/error is in my opinion, going to lower the grade.

  • The strength of the clash will not affect the grade either way. After the coin is graded it will be evaluated by someone else for variety attribution. Varieties will not lower the grade. There are some error types that could possibly lower it; a lamination or another type of planchet flaw.

PCGS uses the CPG for the majority of the varieties they attribute.
  • Thanks for the info.

    Submission going in this weekend.
    Keeping my fingers crossed.

You shudda got that Bugs graded a year or 2 ago. You left a lot of money on the table by waiting. Now there is like 6 of them graded.
  • Oh well, I'm a procrastinator....

I am hoping it will come back 65+ FBL in which case I will be most pleased.
I saw the current top pop on ebay and this coin is quite a bit nicer from my perspective.

    We'll see.

I remember the pic looked 65 all day.image
  • Your '59 Bugs is much stronger than all the others I've seen. However, to the Registry people that probably won't make much difference.
