Best time/way to sell a LARGE commemorative collection?

commacomma Posts: 1,528 ✭✭✭
My dad collected commemoratives directly from the mint for a long time (id say mostly early 80s til around 2005, but thats a guess). He has one of those giant rubbermaid containers filled with coins, all in original cases with original shipping boxes, certs, etc. He wants to get rid of it all, and gave the job to me. I know nothing at all about commemorative coins. Since I know I'm not providing a ton of information, from what Ive said, what would be the best way to go about this?
I would really like to just sell the whole lot in one shot and take a small hit if I have to. Should I piece it out? Is the market decent to sell these now?
He know he is probably going to take a hit on most of it and isn't expecting to sell the whole thing for a ton.
Id appreciate any input. Thanks!

To get the most money, I would sell them one at a time on ebay.

This however is a tremendous amount of work.

Some of the sets have gone up quite a bit in value, others haven't. Plus, silver prices are up from when most of the sets are purchased so that should help as well. Accordingly, not sure you'll really have to take a hit or not, depending on exactly what you have.

If you have access to the Greysheet, page 3B (published every other week) lists out the current bid/ask prices for the modern commemorative sets. In a bulk purchase of all of these at once, I'd guess that you should be able to get 75%-90% of the Greysheet bid price from someone, depending on exactly what you have and how bad someone wants them.

Edited to add that if he was buying the sets that also included gold commemoratives, he might do well selling them based on the run up in gold prices since the time of purchase.

Ya...the tremendous amount of work is what I want to avoid...
Would attempting to sell the whole thing here (or other forums) or on ebay/craigslist etc. something that I should at least try?
I really dont have the time to piece out hundreds of coins that aren't even mine image

Make a list of what there is (including whether or not they're proofs or uncirculated coins) and post it. More detailed advice will depend on the makeup of the collection.

    Hi -

We would auction them for you and do all the work (imaging, listing, collecting payment etc.). Alternatively, please send me a list and perhaps we would buy outright from you as one lot.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 1-800-44-COINS.

Sorry for a stupid question, but what exactly is the greysheet? Is it something you pay for?
